What it is
Constellation Energy Corporation is an American energy company headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland [1]. It supplies electric power, natural gas and energy management services to approximately two million customers across the continental United States, and it is one of the largest electricity producers in the country [1]. Its shares trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol CEG, and Joe Dominguez is its president and chief executive officer [2].
The business sits on both sides of the meter. It sells electricity and gas to retail customers and manages their energy use, and it also owns generation, which places it among the largest power producers in the United States [1].
Company history
Baltimore Gas and Electric created Constellation as a holding company in 1999 [1]. Before a 2012 merger, the business was known as Constellation Energy Group [1]. The current iteration of the company was founded in 2022, when it split off from Exelon [1]. As a standalone company it is listed on the Nasdaq [2].
The Three Mile Island agreement
On 20 September 2024, Constellation announced a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft [2]. The agreement is meant to enable the restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1, which would operate under the name Crane Clean Energy Center and add about 835 megawatts of carbon-free energy to the grid [2]. Constellation said the plant is expected to be online in 2028, and that it will pursue a licence renewal to extend operations to at least 2054 [2].
A power purchase agreement is a long-term contract in which a buyer commits to take electricity from a plant over many years. That gives the operator a predictable revenue stream, which matters when the money has to be spent up front to bring a shut-down plant back into service. The 835 megawatts figure describes the plant's continuous output of electric power.
Unit 1 had operated at industry-leading safety levels for decades before it was shut down for economic reasons in 2019 [2]. It was fully independent of Unit 2, which shut down after the 1979 accident [2]. The distinction is worth keeping straight: the restart concerns a reactor with its own operating record, not the unit involved in the accident.
Economic claims
A study by Brattle Group, commissioned by the Pennsylvania Building & Construction Trades Council, found that the restart would create 3,400 direct and indirect jobs and add $16 billion to Pennsylvania's GDP [2].
Where it fits
Constellation's ordinary business is retail supply and generation for a large customer base [1]. The Crane announcement put it at the centre of a narrower question: what to do with reactors that are technically sound but no longer economic to run. Three Mile Island Unit 1 stopped in 2019 for economic reasons rather than for safety ones [2], and the 2024 agreement pairs it with a single long-term buyer instead of the wholesale market alone.
Bringing a shut reactor back requires several things at once: a licence, equipment that can be returned to service, and a customer willing to pay over a long horizon. The 20-year contract addresses the third, and licence renewal is the step the company said it would take next [2]. Constellation's role in the discussion comes from that combination — a large, conventional power supplier attaching a 20-year contract to a specific nuclear plant.
