What it is

Claude apps are the chat products through which people use Claude without writing code. The main website is claude.ai, and there are mobile and desktop versions as well. Anthropic offers the apps to individuals, who can use a free plan or paid plans, and to organisations, which buy Team and Enterprise plans. Over time the apps have grown from a plain chat window into a set of tools: they can summarise long conversations, run code, create files, search the web, and follow instructions packaged as skills.

Origins

The public beta website claude.ai opened with Claude 2 on 11 July 2023 in the US and UK.[1] Claude Pro followed on 7 September 2023 at $20 a month in the US, or GBP 18 in the UK. It gave subscribers five times the free tier's usage of Claude 2, along with priority access during busy periods.[2]

On 1 May 2024 Anthropic added a Team plan at $30 per user per month, with a minimum of five seats and a 200K-token context window, and a free iOS app that syncs chats with the web.[3] Artifacts arrived with Claude 3.5 Sonnet in June 2024. An Artifact is a side window that shows generated code, documents and designs next to the chat.[4] On 25 June 2024 Projects followed for Pro and Team users, with a 200K-token knowledge base and custom instructions for each project.[4]

In September 2024 Anthropic announced Claude for Enterprise, with a 500K-token context window, SSO, SCIM, audit logs, role-based permissions and a GitHub integration.[5]

Web search arrived on 20 March 2025 as a preview for paid users in the US, and became available globally on all plans on 27 May 2025.[6] On 15 April 2025 Research followed, running multiple chained searches with citations for Max, Team and Enterprise users, together with a Google Workspace integration for Gmail, Calendar and Google Docs.[7] According to Wikipedia, a Max subscription at up to $200 a month was introduced in April 2025.[8]

In September 2025, with Claude Sonnet 4.5, the apps gained code execution and the ability to create spreadsheets, slides and documents.[10] With Claude Opus 4.5 in November 2025, long chats stopped reaching a limit, because earlier context is summarised.[10][11] On 16 October 2025 Agent Skills came to the apps. Skills are folders of instructions and scripts that Claude loads when they are relevant to a task.[12]

Main features

The main features can be read in three groups. The first is working with content. Artifacts keep generated code, documents and designs beside the conversation, so a person can see and revise them as they go. Projects gather documents, code and other knowledge under one roof, with a 200K-token window per project and custom instructions that apply to every chat inside it.

The second group is finding and researching. Web search lets Claude decide when to look something up and gives citations so that users can check the sources. Research goes further: it runs several searches that build on each other, explores different angles on its own, and presents the result with citations.

The third group is extending Claude. Agent Skills let a person add reusable instructions and scripts, and Claude loads only the skills a given task needs. Team and Enterprise plans add administrative controls for users and data.

Where it stands

As of November 2026 the plans are Free, Pro at $20 a month, Max at $100 a month, Ultra at $200 a month with ten times Pro usage, and the Team and Enterprise plans. Fable models are available to subscribers through usage credits.[9] The Max price has moved since the 2025 introduction, when Wikipedia reports it was up to $200 a month.[8][9]

Wikipedia also reports that shared chats and Artifacts were found indexed by Google in July 2026. Anthropic said the listings were removed after that.[8] For readers of the archive, that episode is a reminder that a shared link can be found by others, and that a platform's own account of the fix is one source among others.

For readers, the apps are the easiest way to see how Claude's abilities arrived over time: first a conversation, then files, projects and search, and then research, code, and skills that extend what Claude can do in a single chat.
