What it is

Claude 2 is Anthropic's AI model released on 11 July 2023. It came with better performance and longer responses than the Claude 1 models. It was available through the API and through a new public beta website, claude.ai.[1] Wikipedia describes it as the first Claude model available to the general public.[3]

The claude.ai beta was generally available in the US and UK. The API was offered to businesses at the same price as Claude 1.3.[1]

Main improvements

Claude 2 could take prompts of up to 100K tokens. A token is a small piece of text, roughly a word or part of a word, so 100K tokens is enough for hundreds of pages of documentation or a book. The model could write documents of up to a few thousand tokens in one pass.[1]

Anthropic reported gains over Claude 1.3 on several tests. On the multiple-choice section of the Bar exam, a US legal licensing test, Claude 2 scored 76.5%, up from 73.0%. On Codex HumanEval, a test of Python coding, it scored 71.2%, up from 56.0%. On GSM8K, a set of grade-school maths word problems, it scored 88.0%, up from 85.2%.[1]

On the GRE, the admissions test for graduate school, Claude 2 scored above the 90th percentile of graduate school applicants in reading and writing, and similar to the median applicant in quantitative reasoning.[1]

In Anthropic's internal red-teaming evaluation, Claude 2 gave harmless responses about twice as often as Claude 1.3.[1]

Early use

Partners included Jasper, which cited a context window three times larger than before, and Sourcegraph, whose coding assistant Cody used Claude 2.[1]

Place in the story

Claude 2 was succeeded by Claude 2.1 on 21 November 2023.[3] Anthropic announced the deprecation of the model on 21 January 2025, and the claude-2.0 model was retired on 21 July 2025.[2]
