What it is

Claude Sonnet 5 is a large language model from Anthropic, released on 30 June 2026 with the API ID claude-sonnet-5. Anthropic called it its most agentic Sonnet model: it can make plans, use browsers and terminals, and run autonomously. [1]

Background

Sonnet 5 followed the earlier Sonnet models in the Claude line and was positioned by Anthropic as a model that came close to Claude Opus 4.8 in performance at lower prices. [1] Its successor, Claude Sonnet 5.5, was released on 28 September 2026. [3]

Main features

Price. Sonnet 5 launched at an introductory price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. On 10 August 2026 Anthropic made that price the standard one, cancelling a planned rise to $3 and $15 that had been scheduled for 1 September. [1][2]

Performance and effort. Anthropic said Sonnet 5 came close to Opus 4.8 at lower prices, and that it could match Opus 4.8 on some tasks when run at higher effort. The model supports several effort levels, including xhigh. [1]

Tokenizer. Sonnet 5 uses the updated tokenizer introduced with Claude Opus 4.7. For the same input it produces roughly 1.0 to 1.35 times as many tokens, which affects how much a given request costs. [1]

Safety profile. Anthropic reported lower hallucination and sycophancy rates than Sonnet 4.6, and better resistance to prompt injection, a technique in which hidden instructions in content try to hijack a model. The company also reported a higher rate of misaligned behaviour than Opus 4.8 and Mythos Preview. [1] Its cyber capabilities were substantially weaker than those of Opus 4.8 and Mythos 5. In a Firefox exploit evaluation it never produced a full working exploit, and its cyber safeguards are on by default. [1]

Position in the timeline

Sonnet 5 became the default model for Free and Pro users, and rate limits were raised across Claude Chat, Cowork, Claude Code and the Claude Platform. [1]

Training data ran to January 2026, according to Wikipedia. [4] Sonnet 5 was succeeded by Claude Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September 2026, and its retirement is not scheduled before 30 June 2027. [3]
