What it is

Claude 3.7 Sonnet is a large language model developed by Anthropic and released on 24 February 2025 under the API identifier claude-3-7-sonnet-20250219. Anthropic called it “the first hybrid reasoning model on the market”: one model that can answer almost instantly or think step by step at length.[1][3] A large language model is a program trained on very large amounts of text so that it can read and write natural language. Reasoning models are trained to spend extra output on working through a problem before answering.

Origins

The model was launched together with Claude Code, a command-line tool that lets the model act as a coding agent, meaning it can carry out multi-step programming tasks with some autonomy. Claude Code was released as a limited research preview. The same announcement made Claude's GitHub integration available on all plans.[1]

According to Wikipedia, its training data ran to October 2024.[4]

Main features

The model offered an extended thinking mode, in which its reasoning is visible to the user. This mode was available on all Claude plans except the free tier. API users could set a thinking budget, measured in tokens and capped at the 128K-token output limit, to trade speed and cost against answer quality.[1]

On SWE-bench Verified, a coding benchmark, the model scored 63.7% without special scaffolding, measured on a 489-task subset, and 70.3% with high-compute scaffolding. Anthropic also reported state-of-the-art results on TAU-bench, a benchmark of agentic tool use.[1] Anthropic reported 45% fewer unnecessary refusals than its predecessor.[1]

Pricing stayed at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Thinking tokens are billed as output.[1] The model was available on all Claude plans (Free, Pro, Team and Enterprise), on the Anthropic API, on Amazon Bedrock and on Google Cloud Vertex AI.[1]

Its place in development

On 20 March 2025 Claude gained web search. The feature launched on Claude 3.7 Sonnet for paid users in the United States.[5] The model was succeeded by Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, announced on 22 May 2025. Anthropic reported that those models were 65% less likely than Sonnet 3.7 to use shortcuts or loopholes on agentic tasks.[2]

Anthropic announced the model's deprecation on 28 October 2025, and it was retired from the Claude API on 19 February 2026.[3]
