What it is

Claude Sonnet 5.5 is a large language model from Anthropic, released on 28 September 2026 with the API ID claude-sonnet-5-5. It was the second model in the Claude 5.5 family. [1]

Price

Sonnet 5.5 is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, the same as Sonnet 5. Anthropic said it costs up to 30% less per task because it typically uses fewer tokens. [1]

On 7 October 2026 the cache-read price was cut by half, from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens. Anthropic said this makes the model about 20% cheaper on most agentic tasks. [2]

Capability

The model supports a 1M-token context window, a maximum output of 128K tokens, adaptive thinking, and a June 2026 knowledge cutoff. [3]

Anthropic compared Sonnet 5.5 with Sonnet 5 on several benchmarks. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 it scored 70.6%, against 10.3% for Sonnet 5. On GDPval-AA v2.1 it reached 1844 Elo, against 1449. On Humanity's Last Exam with tools it scored 64.5%, against 54.9%, and on OSWorld 2.1 (partial) it scored 80.1%, against 57.0%. [1]

Anthropic also said the model generates output more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5, which makes it the fastest Sonnet model it has released so far. [1] It was the first Sonnet model to beat Pokemon Red using only screenshots. [1]

Safeguards

Sonnet 5.5 is the first Sonnet model to ship with cyber safeguards and fallbacks like those on Anthropic's most capable models. Higher-risk cyber requests fall back to Sonnet 5. It is also the first Sonnet model with classifiers that block reasoning extraction for distillation. [1]

Availability

Sonnet 5.5 is available on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, on the Claude Platform, and in the Claude apps. Anthropic recommends it as a replacement for the retiring Claude Sonnet 4.5 and Sonnet 4. [1][4]

Position in the timeline

Its retirement is not scheduled before 28 September 2027. [4]
