What it is

Claude Sonnet 4.6 is a large language model developed by Anthropic and released on 17 February 2026 under the API identifier claude-sonnet-4-6. It came with a 1M-token context window, which was in beta at launch. A context window is the amount of text a model can take into account at once.[1]

Origins

The model followed Claude Sonnet 4.5. Its price was unchanged from Sonnet 4.5 at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.[1]

At launch it became the default model for Free and Pro users on claude.ai and in Claude Cowork. The free tier also gained file creation, connectors, skills and compaction.[1]

According to Wikipedia, training data for the model ran to May 2025.[4]

Main features

The model supports adaptive thinking and extended thinking. Context compaction, which summarises older context so a long session can continue, was in beta.[1]

Anthropic reported 80.2% on SWE-bench Verified, a coding benchmark, with a prompt modification, and 60.4% on ARC-AGI-2 at high effort. Effort is the setting that controls how much work the model spends on a request.[1]

In Claude Code, users preferred Sonnet 4.6 over Sonnet 4.5 about 70% of the time, and over Opus 4.5 59% of the time.[1]

Anthropic described a major improvement in computer use over earlier Sonnet models. The insurer Pace reported 94% on its computer-use benchmark. Anthropic's OSWorld-Verified score for the model was later restated as 78.5%.[1][3]

With the launch, code execution, memory, programmatic tool calling, tool search and tool use examples became generally available in the API. Claude in Excel also gained MCP connectors, which let it connect to outside tools and data sources.[1]

Anthropic said the model was as safe as or safer than its other recent models, with prompt-injection resistance similar to Opus 4.6. Prompt injection is an attack in which hidden instructions in content try to hijack a model.[1]

Its place in development

Anthropic announced the model's successor, Claude Sonnet 5, on 30 June 2026.[2] Retirement of Claude Sonnet 4.6 is not sooner than 17 February 2027.[2][3]
