What it is

OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company headquartered in San Francisco. It was founded in December 2015 as the nonprofit OpenAI, Inc. Its stated mission is “to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.”[1] Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to AI systems that could perform a wide range of intellectual tasks at a human level.

Origins

The founders were Elon Musk and Sam Altman, who served as co-chairs, together with Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata and Wojciech Zaremba. A pledge of $1 billion was made, but by 2021 tax filings showed that only $133 million had been received. Musk left the board in 2018.[1]

On 11 March 2019 the company created a “capped-profit” company, OpenAI LP. First-round investor returns were capped at 100 times their investment.[5]

Microsoft announced a $1 billion investment and an exclusive Azure computing partnership on 22 July 2019. It announced a further $10 billion on 23 January 2023.[1][2]

Main features

The model line runs from GPT-1 (2018) and GPT-2 (2019) through GPT-3 (2020), Codex, DALL·E and CLIP (2021), and GPT-4 (2023). It continues with GPT-4o and the o1 reasoning models (2024), o3, GPT-4.1, gpt-oss and GPT-5 (2025), GPT-5.4, GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6 (2026), and GPT-6 (September 2026).[1]

OpenAI launched ChatGPT on 30 November 2022. At DevDay on 6 October 2025, Sam Altman said ChatGPT had more than 800 million weekly users and that 4 million developers had built with OpenAI.[1][4]

On infrastructure, OpenAI co-founded the Stargate joint venture with SoftBank, Oracle and MGX in January 2025. In 2025 it signed a $300 billion five-year computing deal with Oracle and a six-gigawatt chip deal with AMD. On 24 June 2026 it announced a chip built with Broadcom, called Jalapeño.[1]

Acquisitions include the device startup io in May 2025. In March 2026 it acquired Astral, the Python toolmaker.[1]

Its place in the field

On 17 November 2023 the board removed Altman as CEO. After 745 of 770 employees threatened to resign, he was reinstated within days, and a new board chaired by Bret Taylor was formed.[7]

Leadership has changed several times. Ilya Sutskever left in May 2024 and was succeeded by Jakub Pachocki. John Schulman left for Anthropic in August 2024, and CTO Mira Murati left in September 2024.[1]

On 28 October 2025 OpenAI completed a recapitalisation. The for-profit became OpenAI Group PBC, and the nonprofit became the OpenAI Foundation, which holds about 26%. Microsoft holds about 27%, a stake valued at about $135 billion, and employees and other investors hold about 47%.[1][3]

Under the October 2025 agreement with Microsoft, any declaration of AGI must be verified by an independent expert panel. Microsoft's IP rights run through 2032, and OpenAI committed to buy an additional $250 billion of Azure services.[3]

Funding has grown in steps. In 2025 OpenAI raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation. An October 2025 employee share sale valued it at $500 billion. A 2026 round closed in April at $122 billion of committed capital and an $852 billion post-money valuation, with Amazon, SoftBank and Nvidia as major investors.[1]

The company's CFO said annualised revenue passed $20 billion in 2025, while the 2025 operating loss was $20.92 billion. Its advertising business reached a $1 billion annualised run rate in August 2026.[1]

OpenAI confirmed on 8 June 2026 that it had filed confidentially for an IPO. In September 2026 Altman said it would not go public until 2027, and CFO Sarah Friar said enterprise revenue had overtaken consumer revenue.[1][6]
