What it is

GPT-5.2 is a model family from OpenAI. It was released on 11 December 2025 and included GPT-5.2 Instant, GPT-5.2 Thinking (with standard and extended thinking) and GPT-5.2 Pro, along with the coding variant GPT-5.2-Codex.[1]

Origins

The release came about three weeks after Google’s Gemini 3 Pro.[1] Media reports said an internal “code red” memo accelerated the launch from a planned late-December date.[1][2] Fidji Simo said the company had been working on the release for months, but acknowledged that the “code red” had helped.[1]

Main features

OpenAI highlighted gains in spreadsheets, financial modelling, presentations and multi-step projects.[1] Box CEO Aaron Levie said the model scored 7 points better than GPT-5.1 on Box’s knowledge-work tests.[1]

The API documentation gives GPT-5.2 a context window of 400,000 tokens and a limit of up to 128,000 output tokens. Its knowledge cutoff is 31 August 2025.[3] Developers can set reasoning effort from “none”, the default, up to “xhigh”.[3]

Pricing was $1.75 per million input tokens and $14 per million output tokens. GPT-5.2 Pro cost $21 and $168 per million tokens on the same basis.[3][4]

Place in the lineage

GPT-5.2 succeeded GPT-5.1. It was followed by GPT-5.3-Codex in February 2026 and by GPT-5.4 in March 2026.[1]

The names describe different ways of using the family in ChatGPT: Instant, Thinking (in standard and extended forms) and Pro. The Thinking versions are the ones that reason through a problem before answering, which is the same idea described in the GPT-5.1 entries.[1]

API providers usually bill by the million tokens. For this family the output price was far higher than the input price, so long answers cost considerably more than long prompts.[3][4]

Impact and later changes

The Guardian reported in January 2026 that GPT-5.2 had cited Grokipedia as a source.[1] Later in the lifecycle, GPT-5.2 was discontinued in ChatGPT on 12 June 2026, and gpt-5.2-codex was shut down in the API on 23 July 2026.[5][6]
