What it is
Anthropic is an AI safety and research company. It develops the Claude family of AI models and the products built on them, including the Claude apps, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and the Claude Developer Platform.[1][2]
The company is a public benefit corporation. Its stated mission is “the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity.”[2]
Origins
Anthropic was incorporated in January 2021 by former OpenAI employees. Wikipedia lists the founders as Dario Amodei (CEO), Daniela Amodei (President), Jared Kaplan, Jack Clark, Chris Olah, Ben Mann, Sam McCandlish and Tom Brown.[1] The headquarters is at 500 Howard St, San Francisco.[1]
The company's early funding was $124 million in May 2021 and $580 million in April 2022. The 2022 round included $500 million from FTX.[1]
Governance
The Long-Term Benefit Trust was announced on 19 September 2023. It is an independent body of financially disinterested trustees. It holds Class T stock and elects a growing number of board members, reaching a majority within four years.[3]
The board in 2026 consisted of Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Yasmin Razavi, Reed Hastings, Chris Liddell and Vas Narasimhan.[2]
Safety policy
The company's Responsible Scaling Policy, announced on 19 September 2023, introduced AI Safety Levels, loosely modelled on biosafety levels.[4]
Claude Opus 4 became the first model deployed under AI Safety Level 3 (ASL-3) protections in May 2025.[4][12]
Version 3.0 of the policy, dated 24 February 2026, rewrote it around Frontier Safety Roadmaps and public Risk Reports.[13]
In April 2026 Anthropic restricted its most capable model, Claude Mythos Preview, to Project Glasswing partners for cybersecurity defence.[14]
Products and open standards
The first Claude models were released on 14 March 2023.[11] Anthropic also created the Model Context Protocol and Agent Skills. Both were later donated to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation.[1]
Compute partners
Amazon committed up to $4 billion in September 2023, and AWS became Anthropic's primary cloud provider. A further $4 billion in November 2024 raised Amazon's total to $8 billion. That round also made AWS the primary training partner, working on Trainium chips.[5][6]
Google invested $500 million in October 2023, with $1.5 billion more committed. In March 2025 it agreed to another $1 billion. In October 2025 Anthropic announced access to up to 1 million Google TPUs, with over 1 GW expected online in 2026.[1][9]
Funding and growth
The company's valuation rose in steps. The Series E raised $3.5 billion at $61.5 billion in March 2025. The Series F raised $13 billion at $183 billion in September 2025. The Series G raised $30 billion at $380 billion post-money in February 2026.[1][7][8]
A May 2026 round of $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation has also been reported.[1]
Run-rate revenue grew from about $1 billion at the start of 2025 to over $5 billion in August 2025, and then to $14 billion in February 2026.[7][8]
Legal and regulatory matters
In February and March 2026 the US Department of Defense designated Anthropic a “supply chain risk” after the company refused to drop its usage safeguards. A federal judge issued a temporary injunction on 26 March 2026, calling the action apparent First Amendment retaliation.[1]
In September 2025 Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle the Bartz authors' class action. The settlement was approved in July 2026 as the largest known US copyright settlement.[1]
Public listing
Anthropic made a confidential filing on 1 June 2026. On 26 October 2026 it filed a public S-1 registration statement with the SEC for a proposed initial public offering of Class A stock. The stock would be listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “ANT”.[10][1]
Wikipedia reports about 5,300 employees in September 2026.[1]
