What it is
Claude Design is a product from Anthropic Labs, the company's experimental division, for creating visual work with Claude. The outputs include designs, prototypes, slides and one-page documents. Where a chat assistant produces text, Claude Design is aimed at producing a piece of visual material that a team can review, edit and hand over.
Origins
Anthropic announced Claude Design on 17 April 2026 as an Anthropic Labs product.[1] It is powered by Claude Opus 4.7, which Anthropic called its most capable vision model. A vision model is one that can read and interpret images as well as text, which matters for a tool that works with visual layouts.[1]
The product was released as a research preview, meaning it is an early version offered to a limited group of people so that Anthropic can learn from its use. It is available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers, using the usage limits of their plans. For Enterprise it is off by default, so an organisation has to switch it on.[1]
Main features
During onboarding, Claude Design builds a design system from a team's codebase and design files. A design system is the set of shared colours, typefaces, components and rules that keep a product looking consistent, so this step lets new designs follow a team's existing style rather than starting from nothing.[1]
The tool accepts several kinds of input. People can write text prompts and upload DOCX, PPTX and XLSX files, and can add codebase links and web captures as reference material. Once a design exists, it supports inline comments and direct edits, so review can happen on the design itself.[1]
Designs can be exported to Canva, PDF, PPTX and standalone HTML. A design can also be packaged as a handoff bundle for Claude Code, which carries the design into the coding work that follows.[1]
Where it stands
Claude Design sits between two kinds of Claude product. On one side is the general chat and document work done in the Claude apps. On the other is the coding agent, Claude Code, which builds the software itself. The design tool fills the step between them: it turns an idea into a visual form, takes that form through review, and then passes a bundle that the coding agent can use.[1]
Its position also depends on the design system step. Because the tool learns a team's own codebase and design files, its output is tied to that team's existing material rather than to a general style. For readers, the important point is the chain of steps: input, design system, draft, comment and edit, export or handoff.[1]
