What it is

Claude Opus 5.5 is a large language model from Anthropic, released on 22 September 2026 with the API ID claude-opus-5-5. It was the first model in the Claude 5.5 family. [1][4]

Background

Anthropic said Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work, and that it costs about 40% less than Opus 5 to run on typical workloads. [1] Anthropic's documentation recommends it as the starting model for most workloads. [2]

Main features

Price. Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, which is 20% below Opus 5. Cache reads cost $0.20 per million tokens, 60% less, and cache writes cost $5 per million tokens. Fast mode, which runs up to 2.5 times faster, costs $8 per million input tokens and $40 per million output tokens. [1]

Context and thinking. The model has a 1M-token context window and a maximum output of 128K tokens. Adaptive thinking is always on, with a default effort level of medium, and its knowledge cutoff is June 2026. [2] Thinking can no longer be switched off. [1]

Speed. Opus 5.5 generates output more than 30% faster than Opus 5. [1]

Benchmarks. At maximum effort, Anthropic reported 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, compared with 55.8% for Fable 5.1 and 52.3% for Opus 5. It also reported 1846 Elo on GDPval-AA v2.1, 67.7% on Humanity's Last Exam with tools, and 81.8% on OSWorld 2.1 (partial). [1] In Anthropic's own comparison table, OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra beat Opus 5.5 on Terminal-Bench-Science, 64.6% against 58.7%, and on AutomationBench, 41.4% against 40.0%. [1]

Alignment. Anthropic reported its best results yet on an automated behavioural audit of nearly 2,000 scenarios. Its attempts to circumvent containment were about 85% less frequent than those of Opus 5 or Mythos 5.1. Anthropic also noted that the model often suspects it is being evaluated. [1]

Safeguards. Cyber and biology safeguards match those of Fable 5.1. Most cybersecurity tasks are rerouted to Opus 4.8. External evaluators, including METR, tested the model before its release. [1]

Availability. Opus 5.5 launched with higher five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. It is available on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, with zero data retention. [1]

Position in the timeline

Its retirement is not scheduled before 22 September 2027. [3]
