What it is

Claude 3 Opus is the most capable model of the Claude 3 family, which also includes Haiku and Sonnet. Anthropic announced the family on 4 March 2024, with Opus at the top of the range.[1]

In Anthropic's own description, Opus ran at roughly the speed of Claude 2 and Claude 2.1 but with much higher intelligence. It was offered to Claude Pro subscribers in claude.ai and through the API, and was generally available in 159 countries.[1]

Main features

Opus was priced at $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens.[1] A token is a small piece of text, roughly a word or part of a word, so this price is charged per million tokens sent in and per million tokens generated.

It launched with a 200K-token context window. Anthropic said all three Claude 3 models could accept inputs over 1 million tokens, but this was offered to select customers for specific use cases.[1]

Opus was tested on the Needle In A Haystack evaluation, a long-context test that hides one fact inside a large body of text and asks the model to find it. Recall on that test exceeded 99% accuracy.[1]

The Claude 3 models added vision. They can process photos, charts, graphs and technical diagrams.[1]

Results

On challenging open-ended factual questions, Opus roughly doubled the accuracy of Claude 2.1 while giving fewer incorrect answers.[1]

Anthropic assessed the Claude 3 models as remaining at AI Safety Level 2 (ASL-2) under its Responsible Scaling Policy, the company's framework for matching safeguards to model capability.[1]

Place in the story

Wikipedia's model table gives the training data as running to August 2023.[3]

Anthropic announced the deprecation of claude-3-opus-20240229 on 30 June 2025. The model was retired on 5 January 2026.[2]

A context window is the amount of text a model can take into account at once, including the question and any documents supplied with it. A larger window lets a user work with a whole report or a long codebase in one request, rather than splitting it into pieces.
