What it is

Google DeepMind is an artificial intelligence research organisation headquartered in London, with research centres in the United States, Canada, France, Germany and Switzerland.[1] It states its mission as "to build AI responsibly to benefit humanity".[2] Demis Hassabis is chief executive officer and Lila Ibrahim is chief operating officer. In 2024 the organisation reported revenue of £1.33 billion and net income of £174 million, and in 2025 it had about 6,000 staff.[1]

Origins

The organisation began as DeepMind Technologies, a company incorporated in London on 23 September 2010 and officially launched on 15 November 2010. Its three founders were Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman; Hassabis and Legg had met at University College London's Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit.[1] Early investors included the venture firms Horizons Ventures and Founders Fund, as well as Scott Banister, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk, while Jaan Tallinn was an early investor and adviser.[1]

Google confirmed its acquisition of DeepMind on 26 January 2014; the price was reported at $400–650 million.[1] The lab continued to work as a research group inside Google while keeping its London base.

Research milestones

Among the lab's research milestones are work on deep reinforcement learning applied to Atari games, AlphaGo's 4–1 win over Lee Sedol in March 2016, AlphaFold's win at CASP13 in December 2018, and AlphaFold2's CASP14 results in 2020, which were described as comparable to laboratory techniques.[1] Reinforcement learning, in general terms, means training a system by rewarding it for good outcomes rather than telling it the right answer in advance; AlphaFold was aimed at the problem of predicting how a protein chain folds into a three-dimensional shape. Taken together, these results trace a line from game-playing systems to prediction problems in science.

In 2024 Hassabis and John Jumper shared half of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for protein structure prediction".[5]

Health work and a departure

In September 2015 DeepMind and the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust signed a data-sharing agreement for the Streams app, covering about 1.6 million patients.[1] In July 2017 the UK Information Commissioner's Office ruled that the Royal Free had failed to comply with the Data Protection Act, and on 13 November 2018 DeepMind's health unit and Streams were absorbed into Google Health.[1]

Separately, co-founder Mustafa Suleyman announced in December 2019 that he was leaving DeepMind to join Google in a policy role.[1]

Google DeepMind and the Gemini models

On 20 April 2023 Google merged DeepMind with the Brain team from Google Research to form Google DeepMind, led by CEO Demis Hassabis; Jeff Dean became Chief Scientist of Google Research and Google DeepMind.[3] The merged organisation develops the Gemini model family, first announced on 6 December 2023, which powers Google's Gemini app and developer API.[4]

Gemini 3 was announced on 18 November 2025 by Sundar Pichai, Demis Hassabis and Koray Kavukcuoglu, who was then CTO of Google DeepMind and Chief AI Architect of Google.[6] The Gemini 4 family began with Gemini 4 Argon, made generally available on 13 October 2026, followed by Gemini 4 Carbon on 28 October 2026, initially limited to cyber defenders.[7][8]

Open models and where the organisation sits

Google DeepMind also releases the Gemma family of open models; Gemma 4, released on 2 April 2026, was the first released under the Apache 2.0 license, and by then the Gemma family had passed 400 million downloads.[9]

In a little over a decade the organisation has moved from a small London startup founded by three people to the unit inside Google that builds the Gemini models the company ships in its products and offers to developers, while continuing to publish research in areas such as games, protein structure and open-weight models. It remains headquartered in London, with research staff in five other countries.[1]
