Overview

Mustafa Suleyman is a British AI entrepreneur born in August 1984 in London. He has founded or co-founded several AI companies and, since March 2024, has led Microsoft AI, the Microsoft organisation that builds Copilot and the company's in-house AI models.[1][2]

Education and early research

Suleyman studied philosophy and theology at Mansfield College, Oxford, but left at the age of 19.[1] He was appointed CBE in the 2019 New Year Honours.[1]

He co-founded DeepMind in 2010 with Demis Hassabis and served as its chief product officer. After Google acquired DeepMind in 2014, he became head of applied AI there.[1]

Main contributions

In March 2022 Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI with Reid Hoffman. The company raised $225 million in its first round and launched the Pi chatbot in 2023.[1] In September 2023 he co-wrote the book "The Coming Wave" with Michael Bhaskar.[1]

On 6 November 2025 he announced the MAI Superintelligence Team and its goal of "humanist superintelligence".[3]

Career

Suleyman's path at larger companies was less settled. He was placed on administrative leave in August 2019 and later moved to a policy role at Google. He left Google in January 2022.[1]

On 19 March 2024 he joined Microsoft as executive vice president and chief executive of the new Microsoft AI organisation, reporting to Satya Nadella.[2] From March 2026 his role was refocused on superintelligence and frontier models.[4] On 2 June 2026 he presented seven new in-house MAI models, led by MAI-Thinking-1.[4][5]

Influence

Suleyman's work has moved from research labs and start-ups into large product organisations. His Microsoft role combines the consumer Copilot products with the company's own frontier models, and his public writing, including "The Coming Wave", set out how he sees AI's wider effects.[1][4]

Working across research and products

Suleyman's career moved between three kinds of work: research labs, which study what AI systems can do; start-ups, which try to turn that research into products quickly; and large companies, which operate products used by very many people. Each step changed the scale of the work and the people he worked with. The DeepMind years were centred on research and applied projects, the Inflection years on a consumer chatbot, and the Microsoft years on the consumer Copilot products and the company's own models.[1][2]

Public writing and debate

Suleyman has used books and public statements to explain his view of AI. "The Coming Wave" is written for a general reader, and it discusses how AI and related technologies might spread through society and what governance might be needed. Readers interested in the debate over AI risk and benefit often encounter his arguments in this form.[1]
