What it is

Inflection AI is an American artificial intelligence company founded in 2022 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California.[1] It is organised as a public benefit corporation, a legal form in which a company names a public mission in its charter and its directors are expected to weigh that mission alongside profit.[1] In practice the form lets a company state a mission publicly and still raise venture money and pay staff in equity. Inflection AI is best known for Pi, a chatbot, and for the fact that most of its team moved to Microsoft in 2024.

Founding

Inflection AI was co-founded by Reid Hoffman, Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan.[1] Suleyman's biography dates the co-founding to March 2022.[3] The company was set up in Palo Alto and registered as a public benefit corporation.[1]

Pi

Inflection AI launched its chatbot Pi on 2 May 2023.[2][3] The name is short for "personal intelligence".[2][3] The company's own press page dates the Pi release to the same day.[4] A chatbot is a program that holds a conversation in ordinary language instead of requiring commands or menus; keeping such a conversation coherent over many turns is the hard engineering part of the product.

Funding

In May 2022 the company raised $225 million.[2] In June 2023 it raised $1.3 billion at a $4 billion valuation, in a round that included Nvidia.[1]

The Microsoft deal

In March 2024 Suleyman and Simonyan left Inflection AI to start Microsoft AI.[1] Microsoft hired nearly all of the company's roughly 70 staff and paid $650 million to license its technology, money that was used to reimburse Inflection AI's investors.[1] A licensing payment plus a mass hire is not an acquisition on paper, but it can transfer most of what made a company valuable. The UK Competition and Markets Authority examined the arrangement and found in 2024 that it was a "merger situation", though it did not threaten competition.[1]

After the deal

After the deal the company was led by CEO Sean White, who spoke to Fortune in late 2024 about rebuilding it.[1][2] Its press page lists later posts, among them one dated 28 October 2026 on building multi-speaker capabilities with NVIDIA Nemotron Speech Open Models, and one dated 21 October 2026 on open safety data for personal intelligence.[4]

Where it sits

The company's history so far is short and eventful: founded in March 2022, it released Pi in May 2023, raised $1.3 billion at a $4 billion valuation a month later, and in March 2024 lost its two co-founders and nearly all of its staff to Microsoft.[1][2][3] Because the deal was put together as hiring plus a licence rather than as a purchase of the company, a competition authority had to decide what it actually was; the CMA's answer was that it was a merger situation that did not harm competition.[1]
