What it is
Gemini 4 Argon is the first model in Google's Gemini 4 family. Google announced it on 30 September 2026 and made it generally available on 13 October 2026; both announcements came in posts by Koray Kavukcuoglu[1][2]. Google aimed the model at complex, multi-step work in software engineering, finance, law, cybersecurity and science[2]. The phrasing matters: work of that kind — reading a codebase, locating a fault, changing the code, then running the tests — chains many steps together, and each step's output becomes the next step's input.
How it was prepared
Google said Gemini 4 pre-training had begun by July 2026[5]. Before the general release the company gave the model to trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program, in that setting without cyber guardrails, and it took part in the US government's voluntary pre-release testing process[1]. Both arrangements put the model in front of outside users — security specialists and government testers — before the public could reach it.
Reported results
At announcement Google reported 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1 and 51.3% on AutomationBench, where it placed first[1]. It scored 91.7% on LVBench, a long-video understanding benchmark, and 68% on CWE-bench v1[1]. Google also reported 87% on the ERQA embodied-reasoning benchmark, and said that on the Gray Swan benchmark indirect prompt-injection attacks succeeded only 0.7% of the time[2]. Prompt injection is the trick of hiding instructions inside text or files a model is asked to process, so that the model follows the attacker instead of the user; a lower success rate means the model is harder to steer that way.
Google DeepMind's comparison table lists 50 on the Artificial Analysis Index v5.0 and 69.2% on Vals Index v2.2[3]. Scores like these are produced with the vendor's own harness, prompts and settings, so they describe that particular run rather than a fixed property of the model.
Output, price and availability
The output limit rose from 64,000 tokens to 1 million tokens, and the Gemini API offers a 1-million-token input-output limit[1][2]. A token is the unit a model reads and writes in, roughly a fragment of a word; a million of them is far more than a single answer needs, which is the point — the ceiling is meant for long pieces of work such as a large set of files or a long transcript.
Introductory pricing is $2 per 1 million input tokens and $10 per 1 million output tokens, with cached input 95% off; from 30 November 2026 the two prices rise to $4 and $20[2].
Argon is available in Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Google Antigravity and Gemini for business, and to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode[2][4].
Where it sits
As the first model of its family, Argon is the reference point that later Gemini 4 releases will be compared with. The facts Google chose to lead with — a million-token output ceiling, security testing before release, and scores on software-engineering, automation and long-video benchmarks — describe a model pitched at extended work rather than single-turn chat.
