What Gemini 2.0 Flash is

Gemini 2.0 Flash is the first model of Google's Gemini 2.0 generation. Google released it as an experimental model on 11 December 2024, and described Gemini 2.0 as its model "for the agentic era" — a generation aimed at systems that carry out tasks rather than only answer questions[1].

The name Flash marks a place in the Gemini line: the faster, cheaper tier. Google said 2.0 Flash outperformed 1.5 Pro, the larger model of the previous generation, on key benchmarks while running at twice the speed[1].

What it added

Multimodal input — accepting text, images, audio and video — was already part of the Gemini family. 2.0 Flash added multimodal output: images mixed with text, and steerable text-to-speech audio, meaning the voice output can be directed rather than fixed in advance[1].

It could also call tools natively: Google Search, code execution, and user-defined functions. In practice that means the model itself can decide, partway through a task, to run a search or a piece of code, instead of leaving that step to plumbing written around it[1].

Google released a Multimodal Live API alongside it, for real-time audio and video-streaming input[1]. Google also said tensor processing units (TPUs), its own accelerator chips, powered 100% of Gemini 2.0 training and inference[1].

Agents on top

Gemini 2.0 was presented together with agent prototypes built on it: an updated Project Astra, Project Mariner, and a coding agent called Jules[1]. These were demonstrations of what a model that can call tools and produce mixed output makes possible, announced on the same day as the model rather than shipped as separate products.

A reasoning variant and a cheaper one

Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental is a Flash variant that reasons before answering. It launched shortly before the February 2025 releases and was offered in the Gemini app[2][3].

On 5 February 2025 the model became generally available as gemini-2.0-flash in the Gemini API, Google AI Studio and Vertex AI, with a 1-million-token context window and simplified single pricing per input type[2][3][4].

The same day Google previewed Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite, described as its most cost-efficient model yet. It became generally available on 25 February 2025[3][4].

Where it was used, and when it was retired

A custom version of Gemini 2.0 powered AI Mode in Google Search when that feature was introduced in March 2025[5].

The API versions had a defined lifetime. gemini-2.0-flash and gemini-2.0-flash-lite were shut down in the Gemini API on 1 June 2026[4]. Model endpoints in commercial APIs are commonly retired as newer generations arrive, and these two were retired on that date.
