What it is

Gemini 1.5 Flash is a lightweight model in Google's Gemini 1.5 family. Google announced it on 14 May 2024 at its I/O developer conference, in a post by Demis Hassabis, presenting it as the fastest Gemini model then served in the API.[1] An API, or application programming interface, is the channel through which other software calls a model, so “fastest in the API” describes how quickly developers get answers back, not only how a model scores on tests.

Where it came from

Inside the family it sat below Gemini 1.5 Pro: Google described it as lighter than 1.5 Pro and designed to be fast and efficient to serve at scale.[1] It was not trained from scratch. Google trained it with 1.5 Pro through a process it called distillation, transferring the most essential knowledge and skills from the larger model to the smaller one.[1] Distillation in general means letting a small model learn from the outputs and behaviour of a large one, so that it picks up much of the larger model's competence at a far lower computing cost.

What it offered

Like 1.5 Pro, 1.5 Flash was offered in public preview with a context window of 1 million tokens, in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.[1] The context window is how much input a model can take into account at once; a very long one makes it possible to work over whole books, long transcripts or large tables within a single request.

Google named summarisation, chat applications, image and video captioning, and data extraction from long documents and tables as uses.[1] It said 1.5 Flash is optimised for high-volume, high-frequency tasks at scale and is more cost-efficient to serve.[1] It also said that although 1.5 Flash is lighter than 1.5 Pro, it is highly capable of multimodal reasoning — reasoning across more than one kind of input, such as text together with images.[1] For developers, that adds up to a choice inside one family: the larger model when capability matters most, the lighter one when very many requests have to be handled cheaply.

Place in the line

1.5 Flash was released to the API on 14 May 2024, and it was later succeeded by Gemini 2.0 Flash; the Gemini 1.5 models have since been discontinued.[2] The arrangement it illustrates — a cheaper, faster sibling beside a flagship, trained by distillation from it and aimed at high-frequency use — became a common way for model providers to serve many small requests rather than a few large ones.
