AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search

AI Overviews are AI-written summaries placed at the top of Google Search results, launched across the US in May 2024 and later joined by AI Mode, a separate search experiment. They became one of the most widely used consumer applications of generative AI.

What an AI Overview is

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of Google Search results [2]. They change the shape of an ordinary results page: rather than only a ranked list of links with short snippets, the page can open with a written answer produced by a model, with the links following underneath. For a reader, that means the first thing on the screen is an attempt to answer the question directly, not a set of places to go and read.

The feature matters less as a technical novelty than as a distribution channel. It puts generated text in front of people who never signed up for a chatbot or opened a separate AI product; searching is something hundreds of millions of people already do every day.

From an experiment to a default

AI Overviews grew out of the Search Generative Experience (SGE), which Google unveiled at its I/O developer conference in May 2023 [2]. SGE was the experimental form; the productised version arrived a year later. At Google I/O on 14 May 2024, Google began rolling AI Overviews out to everyone in the United States, saying it expected to bring them to more than a billion people by the end of that year. The summaries were powered by a new Gemini model customised for Google Search [1].

What went wrong early

Within days of the US rollout, the feature produced answers that were harmful or simply nonsensical — the most widely repeated example being a suggestion to put glue on pizza. In May 2024 the problem led Google to temporarily restrict the tool [2]. The episode illustrated a structural difficulty of the format: a summary built out of what is already on the web inherits the web's errors, and a confident-sounding paragraph at the top of the page gives those errors far more reach than a link buried on page three.

AI Mode

On 5 March 2025 Google introduced AI Mode, described as an early experiment in Search Labs, built on a custom version of Gemini 2.0. In the same announcement the company said AI Overviews were used by more than a billion people [3]. AI Mode is a second surface for the same underlying idea: the model does not only summarise results, it becomes the thing the user is interacting with. It began as an opt-in experiment rather than a default part of the results page.

Scale, and a changing model line-up

On 18 November 2025 Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had 2 billion monthly users, and Gemini 3 Pro came to AI Mode that day for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers [4]. After that the default model behind AI Mode changed at a steady clip: Gemini 3 Flash became the default from 17 December 2025 [5], and Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default in AI Mode globally on 19 May 2026 [6]. Newer, larger models arrived first for paying subscribers — Gemini 4 Argon reached AI Mode for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in October 2026 [7].

Why it matters

The sequence is a compact record of how generative AI moved into everyday software. A research demo shown at a developer conference in May 2023 became a feature switched on for an entire country in May 2024, was reported at a billion users by March 2025 and two billion monthly users by November 2025, and by 2026 was being re-pointed at new model releases several times a year [2][3][4][5][6][7].

Both halves of that record are worth keeping. The reach is the point: an answer placed above the links reaches people who would never seek out an AI tool. The May 2024 failures are the counterweight, and they show why the format is debated — a summary at the top of the page is an editorial act performed at search-engine scale, and when it is wrong, it is wrong in front of everyone at once.
