What it is

Meta AI is a conversational assistant that Meta introduced at Meta Connect on 27 September 2023. It launched in a US beta on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, with Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Quest 3 support to follow.[1]

Origins

At launch it ran on a custom model built with Llama 2 technology. It got real-time information through a search partnership with Bing, and it could generate images with the “/imagine” command using Meta's Emu image model.[1] Meta launched 28 AI characters alongside it, 14 of them played by celebrities and influencers such as Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, Kendall Jenner and Naomi Osaka.[1]

On 18 April 2024 Meta AI was rebuilt on Llama 3. It was added to search in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, given its own meta.ai website, and expanded in English to more than a dozen countries outside the US.[2] From July 2024 people in the US could try Llama 3.1 405B on WhatsApp and meta.ai.[3]

Key features

Meta AI on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram Direct and meta.ai moved to Llama 4 in April 2025.[4] A standalone Meta AI app launched on 29 April 2025, built with Llama 4. It has a Discover feed, voice conversations, memory and personalisation. It replaced the Meta View app for Ray-Ban Meta glasses.[5]

In June 2025 Meta said Meta AI had more than 1 billion monthly active users.[6]

Where it fits

On 8 April 2026 Meta AI switched to Muse Spark. It added Instant and Thinking modes, plus a multi-agent Contemplating mode. From 12 May 2026 the new model reached WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Threads and Meta's glasses.[7][8]

Muse Image arrived in the Meta AI app and meta.ai on 7 July 2026, and Muse Spark 1.1 powered its Thinking mode from 9 July 2026.[9][10]

Each rebuild changed the model behind the assistant while keeping the same product, so the sequence of model names in this entry is also a timeline of the assistant's development.[7][10]
