Meta Superintelligence Labs releases Muse Spark

On 8 April 2026 Meta Superintelligence Labs released Muse Spark, the first model from the lab and the first of the Muse series. It is closed: its weights were not released, and it was offered through a private API preview.

A sealed box on a preview pedestal connects by one cable to a terminal.

Background

Muse Spark came from Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the lab that Mark Zuckerberg announced and that Alexandr Wang leads. TechCrunch described the model as a ground-up overhaul of Meta's AI, led by Wang.[2] Muse is the name of the model series that Muse Spark started.[1]

What happened

On 8 April 2026 Meta released Muse Spark, the first model from MSL and the first of the Muse series.[1][2] Muse Spark is a natively multimodal reasoning model with tool use, visual chain of thought and multi-agent orchestration.[1]

Key details

Capabilities. Visual chain of thought means the model reasons through an image step by step. Multi-agent orchestration means one model coordinates several sub-agents that work on parts of a task. Tool use means the model can call outside programs, such as search, to get information or take an action.[1]

Modes. Muse Spark powers the Meta AI app and meta.ai. It has Instant and Thinking modes, and a Contemplating mode that runs parallel agents.[3][1] Instant mode answers quickly, while Thinking mode spends more time reasoning before answering. Contemplating mode splits work among agents that run at the same time.

Benchmark. Meta reported 58% on Humanity's Last Exam in Contemplating mode. It said the model needed over an order of magnitude less compute than Llama 4 Maverick to reach the same capabilities.[1] Humanity's Last Exam is a difficult benchmark of expert-level questions. "An order of magnitude less" means roughly ten times less.

Weights. Unlike the Llama models, Muse Spark's weights were not released. Select partners received a private API preview. Meta said it hoped to open-source future versions.[3] An API preview lets approved developers send requests to the model without having a copy of it.

Expansion. On 12 May 2026 Meta expanded Muse Spark to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Threads and its smart glasses.[3]

Impact

Muse Spark was the first model from the new lab, and it moved Meta's assistant onto a new model family. Its weights were not released, which set it apart from the open Llama line, although Meta said it hoped to open-source future versions. By 12 May 2026 it had reached Meta's messaging apps, Facebook, Threads and its smart glasses, which shows how widely the model was placed across Meta's products.[1][2][3]
