Overview
Mark Zuckerberg is an American technology executive. He is the chairman, chief executive and controlling shareholder of Meta Platforms, the company formerly known as Facebook.[1] Meta's AI research, from the Facebook AI Research lab to Meta Superintelligence Labs, has been carried out inside that company.[4]
Education and early work
Zuckerberg launched “Thefacebook” at Harvard University on 4 February 2004, together with Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.[1] He left Harvard during his second year.[1]
Major contributions
In late 2013 he personally recruited researchers at the NeurIPS conference to start Facebook AI Research. He partnered with Yann LeCun to build the lab.[2]
On 23 July 2024, alongside the release of Llama 3.1, he published “Open Source AI Is the Path Forward”. The essay argued that open AI models would follow the path of Linux.[3]
On 30 July 2025 he published the letter “Personal Superintelligence”. In it he set Meta's goal of a personal superintelligence for everyone, and said Meta would be careful about what it open-sources.[5]
Career
Zuckerberg has served as chairman and chief executive of Meta Platforms. Meta Platforms, formerly Facebook, went public in May 2012.[1]
On 30 June 2025 he announced Meta Superintelligence Labs in an internal memo. He named Alexandr Wang chief AI officer and Nat Friedman head of AI products.[4]
The two texts were published a year apart, and both address how Meta should release its AI models. Readers who want the company's own reasoning on the question can read them in order.[3][5]
Impact
Zuckerberg's public statements, in particular the 2024 essay and the 2025 letter, are the clearest record of how Meta frames the choice between open and closed AI. Readers who want to understand the company's position on open-sourcing models can start with these two texts.[3][5]
