What it is
Apple Intelligence is Apple's personal-intelligence system, built into iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple announced it at WWDC on 10 June 2024 for iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.[1] It runs many models on the device itself. Larger requests go to Private Cloud Compute, a set of Apple-silicon servers that Apple says do not retain user data and whose software can be inspected by independent experts.[1]
Origins
The first launch features were Writing Tools, meaning rewriting, proofreading and summarising text, notification and email summaries, Clean Up in Photos and a more natural Siri. They shipped free in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 on 28 October 2024, in US English.[2]
iOS 18.2 on 11 December 2024 added Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand, Visual Intelligence and an optional ChatGPT integration in Siri and Writing Tools.[3]
Main features
The ChatGPT integration uses GPT-4o. It is free without an account, and Siri asks permission before sending anything to ChatGPT.[1]
Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later, or a device in the iPhone 16 family, as well as iPads and Macs with M1 or later.[2][3]
On 31 March 2025 the languages expanded to Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and others.[3]
Apple paused news notification summaries in January 2025 after the BBC complained of false summaries. Apple later restored them with a "Summarized by Apple Intelligence" label.[3]
iOS 26, released on 15 September 2025, added Live Translation and the Foundation Models framework for third-party apps.[3]
Delays and the 2026 update
A promised personal-context Siri was delayed repeatedly. A class action over the delays, Landsheft v. Apple, was filed on 19 March 2025, and it led to a proposed $250 million settlement in May 2026.[3]
At WWDC on 8 June 2026 Apple introduced Siri AI, built on its next-generation foundation models. It offers personal context, onscreen awareness, web answers and a dedicated Siri app, starting in English.[4]
Place in development
China's Cyberspace Administration approved Apple Intelligence on 15 July 2026. Apple announced a first China release for December 2026, with an Alibaba Qwen integration.[3]
