Overview
Arthur Mensch is a French AI researcher and entrepreneur. In 2023 he co-founded Mistral AI with Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, and he has served as the company's chief executive since then. [1][2] His work spans academic machine learning, research at a large AI laboratory and the leadership of a company that releases open-weight language models.
Education and early research
Mensch studied at École Polytechnique, which he entered in 2011. He then studied at Télécom Paris and in the MVA master's programme at ENS Paris-Saclay. [1] He completed a PhD at Inria and NeuroSpin from 2015 to 2018. His doctoral research applied machine learning to the analysis of functional MRI (fMRI) scans, which measure brain activity by tracking changes in blood flow. [1] From 2018 to 2020 he was a postdoctoral researcher at ENS. [1]
Main contributions
From late 2020 to May 2023 Mensch worked at DeepMind in Paris. There he worked on large language models and multimodal systems, which are models that handle more than one kind of data, such as text and images. [1]
He is a co-author of "Training Compute-Optimal Large Language Models", a 2022 paper usually called the Chinchilla paper. It studied how to balance the size of a model against the amount of training data for a fixed compute budget. [4] He is also a co-author of the Mistral 7B paper, posted to arXiv in October 2023. [3]
Career
Mensch worked at DeepMind until May 2023. Later that year he co-founded Mistral AI and became its chief executive. [1][2] In September 2023 he joined the French government's generative AI expert committee. [1]
He has also taken part in public debate about AI policy in France. He testified before the French Senate in May 2024 and before a National Assembly commission of inquiry in May 2026. [1]
Influence
Mensch was named to the TIME100 AI list in 2024. On 15 May 2025 he was appointed Knight of the National Order of Merit. [1] His career links academic machine learning, large-scale research at DeepMind and the building of a commercial company. He is a co-author of the Mistral 7B paper, which describes a model from the company he leads. [3][1]
