Mistral AI
Mistral AI is a Paris-based company founded in April 2023. It builds open-weight and commercial large language models, the Le Chat assistant and the Vibe coding agent, and it has grown quickly through several large funding rounds.

What it is
Mistral AI is a French artificial intelligence company headquartered in Paris. It builds large language models, which are programs trained on very large amounts of text so that they can read and write natural language. Some of its models are released as open-weight models, meaning the trained weights can be downloaded and run by anyone. Others are commercial models that customers reach through an API (application programming interface), a standard way for one piece of software to call another. The company states its mission as making frontier AI open to all and helping to solve the world's hardest problems together. [1] Wikipedia reports that the company had more than 1,000 employees in 2026. [2]
Origins
Mistral was founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch, who became chief executive and had previously worked at DeepMind. Guillaume Lample became chief science officer and Timothée Lacroix became chief technology officer. Lample and Lacroix had both worked at Meta before Mistral. [1][2]
The company's own timeline is short. It hired its first employee on 5 June 2023 and dated its seed round to 13 June 2023. Its first model, Mistral 7B, came out on 27 September 2023, and its Series A followed on 11 December 2023. Mistral Large was released on 26 February 2024, and the Series B came on 11 June 2024. The company reached its 100th employee on 30 September 2024. [1]
Funding
Mistral has raised money several times, and each round has been larger than the one before. The seed round was €105 million, with investors including Lightspeed, Eric Schmidt, Xavier Niel and JCDecaux. [2] In December 2023 the company raised about €385 million at a valuation above €2 billion. [2] In June 2024 it raised €600 million at a valuation of €5.8 billion. [2]
On 9 September 2025 Mistral raised a €1.7 billion Series C led by ASML, at an €11.7 billion post-money valuation. Post-money valuation means the value of the company after the new money has been added. ASML also formed a strategic partnership with the company. [3] In September 2026 it raised a €3 billion Series D led by Samsung Electronics. The round was co-led by the Scaleup Europe Fund, which is managed by EQT, and by PSG Equity. The post-money valuation was more than €21 billion. Mistral described the round as the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company. [4]
Partnerships and infrastructure
On 26 February 2024 Microsoft and Mistral announced a multi-year partnership. It covers Azure supercomputing, distribution of Mistral's premium models on Azure, and joint research and development. [5] Wikipedia reports a $16 million Microsoft investment. [2]
On 11 June 2025 Mistral announced Mistral Compute, an AI infrastructure offering built with NVIDIA. Its launch partners included BNP Paribas, Orange, SNCF, Thales and Veolia. [6] Mistral's first acquisition was Koyeb, a Paris AI cloud startup, which was reported in February 2026. [2] On 23 May 2026 the company agreed to acquire Emmi AI, an Austrian physics-AI company. [8]
Models and products
Mistral's open-weight models include Mistral 7B, Mixtral, Mistral NeMo, Pixtral 12B, Mistral Small 3 and 4, and Mistral Large 3. Most of them are released under the Apache 2.0 licence, which allows broad use with few restrictions. [7][2] Its commercial premier models are served through its API, first on La Plateforme and later on Mistral AI Studio. [7][2]
The product range covers several kinds of work. It includes the Le Chat assistant, the coding models Codestral and Devstral, the Mistral Vibe coding agent, the Pixtral vision models, the Magistral reasoning models, the Voxtral speech models and Mistral OCR. [2][9]
The flagship line began with Mistral Large in February 2024. Mistral Large 2, released in July 2024, has 123 billion parameters. Mistral Large 3, released in December 2025, is a 675-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model under Apache 2.0. A mixture-of-experts model is built from many smaller sub-networks, and only some of them are used for each token of text. Mistral Large 4, dated October 2026, is described as having about one trillion parameters. [2]
Its place in the field
Mistral combines two approaches. It publishes open weights that anyone can run, and it also sells closed commercial models through an API. Its 2026 funding announcement described the aim of making sovereign, open-weight AI the technology frontier. [4] The company's own history shows how fast the field moves. Its first model arrived less than five months after the company was founded. [1][3]
