What it is

Mistral Vibe is an open-source command-line coding assistant from Mistral AI, announced on 9 December 2025 alongside the Devstral 2 model.[1] The user states what they want in ordinary language; the tool then explores the code, edits files and runs the commands needed to carry the change out, working either in the terminal or through an integrated development environment (IDE).[1] It is released under the Apache 2.0 licence, which allows other people to use, modify and redistribute the code.[1]

That describes the first version. The name later came to stand for a larger product: in later releases a chat client, cloud coding sessions and an editor extension all sat under the same name, and by the end of May 2026 it had absorbed Mistral's general chat assistant.

A command-line agent of this kind works differently from the autocompletion familiar in an editor. Autocomplete proposes what to type next; an agent is handed a task and then decides which files to open, which edits to make and which commands to run, reporting back when it is done. That is what makes such a tool useful for changes that span several files, and it is also why the question of where the code actually runs becomes important.

Version 2.0

On 27 January 2026 Mistral released Vibe 2.0, which added custom subagents, multi-choice clarifications, slash-command skills and unified agent modes.[2] These changes mostly reshape the conversation rather than the editing itself. Subagents are separate helper agents configured for a narrower job, so that a large task can be split up. Multi-choice clarifications let the tool ask a question with a small set of answers instead of waiting for free text. Slash-command skills are reusable routines invoked by typing a command name, in the way command-line users already call up shortcuts. Unified agent modes remove the need to pick a separate mode for each kind of work.

Vibe 2.0 was included in the Le Chat Pro and Team plans and was powered by the Devstral 2 family.[2]

Remote agents

On 22 May 2026 Mistral added remote agents: cloud coding sessions in isolated sandboxes that can be started from the command line or from Le Chat, and that can open GitHub pull requests.[3] A sandbox here is a separate environment reserved for one session, so that broad edits and software installs happen away from the user's own machine.[3] In the same update, Mistral Medium 3.5 replaced Devstral 2 as the tool's model.[3]

One agent for work and code

On 28 May 2026 Le Chat was merged into Vibe, presented as a single agent for work and code, with a VS Code extension and a command-line interface.[4] The new VS Code extension works in the editor sidebar: it reads and edits files across a project and runs commands.[4] The same announcement listed the Vibe Pro plan at $14.99 per month and the Team plan at $24.99 per user per month.[4]

Where it sits

Vibe keeps a client and a model family together. The tool was first driven by Devstral 2 and later by Mistral Medium 3.5, both from the same company, and the general chat assistant was eventually folded into it so that one interface covers both everyday conversation and code work.[3][4]

The open licence matters for how the tool can travel: released under Apache 2.0, its code can be used, modified and redistributed by others.[1] Starting from the terminal, meanwhile, places it inside habits developers already have rather than asking them to move to a new application, while the later VS Code extension offers the same capabilities inside the editor sidebar.[1][4] The paid plans, at $14.99 per month and $24.99 per user per month, mark the point where the project became a product sold by subscription as well as an open-source program.[4]
