Background
Le Chat is the chat assistant from Mistral AI. In its 18 November 2024 update, Mistral AI added a group of features that go beyond plain question-and-answer: web search with citations, a Canvas workspace, image generation, and agents that can be saved and shared. The whole set was free to use while the product was in beta.[1]
What the update added
The most consequential change was search. Le Chat could now search the web and attach citations to its answers, so instead of taking a reply on trust, a reader can follow the reference back to where a statement came from.[1] Citations matter because a chat answer is otherwise a closed box: the text sounds equally confident whether it is right or wrong, and there is no way to check it without repeating the research by hand.
The second addition was Canvas, which Mistral AI describes as a new interface that pops up in Le Chat when a user needs to go beyond conversations and into ideation.[1] A conversation is linear — you say something, the model answers, you say something else — and that shape is awkward when what you actually want is a document, a draft, or a plan that you keep working on. Canvas gives that work a place to live inside the chat.
Third came image generation, which used Black Forest Labs' Flux Pro models.[1] Fourth came agents: a repetitive workflow could be saved and shared, so a sequence of steps set up once could be handed to another person rather than rebuilt from scratch.[1]
Alongside the new surfaces, the November 2024 update made responses faster, powered by speculative editing.[2] Speculative techniques in general work by producing a cheap draft first and then checking or correcting it, so the user waits less for the final text.
The details that matter
Canvas was not just a bigger text box. It allowed in-place editing, versioning, and export.[1] Versioning is the practical part: when a draft is edited in place, the earlier state disappears unless something keeps it, and being able to step back is what makes it safe to rewrite aggressively. Export is what turns the workspace back into an ordinary file that can leave the product.
The agent feature points in a similar direction. Chat is usually a one-off exchange; saving a workflow as a shareable agent turns a repeated routine into something closer to a small tool that others can run.[1]
Image generation, meanwhile, was not built in-house: Mistral AI used Flux Pro models from Black Forest Labs.[1] That is a common arrangement — a chat product supplies the interface and the conversation, and a specialised model supplies the images.
Why it matters
The update is best read as a bundling move. Search with citations, an editable workspace, image generation and saved agents are four different answers to the same complaint about chat assistants: that they are good at talking and bad at finishing anything. Adding them in one release, and making them free during the beta, put the whole set in front of users at once.[1]
It also shows where the assistant category was heading. A chat box competes on the quality of a single answer; a workspace with citations, versions and shareable routines competes on whether the work gets done and can be checked afterwards.
