What it is

NotebookLM is an AI research and note-taking tool from Google Labs. What sets it apart from a general-purpose chatbot is that it is grounded in sources the user chooses: each response cites the most relevant quotes from those sources.[1][2] In practice, you hand it a body of material — documents, slides, a website, the transcript of a video — and then ask questions about that material, and the answers point back to the passages they rest on. Grounding of this kind narrows what the tool can say to what the supplied material supports, which makes the output easier to check: a reader can follow a citation back to the original text and judge whether the answer holds up.

Where it came from

The tool was first shown as "Project Tailwind" at Google I/O in 2023.[1] Google introduced it under the name NotebookLM on 12 July 2023, in a post by Raiza Martin and Steven Johnson, as an experimental offering for a small group of users in the United States.[1] At the start the sources it could work with were Google Docs; PDFs, Google Slides, websites and YouTube transcripts were added later.[1][2]

Audio Overviews

On 11 September 2024 the product added Audio Overviews, which turn a user's sources into a podcast-style discussion between two AI hosts.[3] Rather than reading a summary, a listener hears two voices talk through the material, which gives the same content a form that can be listened to on the move. In December 2024 users could join an Audio Overview and put questions to the hosts, and Spotify Wrapped 2024 included an AI podcast powered by NotebookLM.[2]

From experiment to product

Google removed the "experimental" label in October 2024.[2] A paid tier, NotebookLM Plus, launched for businesses in December 2024 and became available to individuals through the Google One AI Premium plan on 10 February 2025.[2] Video Overviews rolled out on 29 July 2025, and Audio and Video Overviews were later expanded to more than 80 languages.[2] In November 2025 the product added Infographic and Slide Deck outputs powered by Nano Banana Pro, and Cinematic Video Overviews followed for Google AI Ultra subscribers on 4 March 2026.[2]

A lawsuit and a new name

In February 2026 the journalist David Greene sued Google, alleging that the Audio Overviews feature reproduced his voice; Google denied the claim.[2] In July 2026 Google rebranded NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook.[2]

Why it matters

NotebookLM is a clear example of a pattern that sits between a search engine and a chatbot. A general assistant draws on everything it was trained on and asks the reader to trust the result; this tool draws only on a closed set of documents and shows its work through citations.[1][2] That design suits study and research, where the point is to stay close to a particular set of texts rather than to produce a plausible-sounding answer.

The Audio Overviews feature pushed the same idea into a second medium. Turning a pile of documents into a conversation between two hosts made the tool visible to people who would never upload a PDF on their own, and its appearance in Spotify Wrapped 2024 put a NotebookLM-made podcast in front of a very large audience.[2] The later additions — video, infographics and slide decks — continued the move from text answers toward finished, presentable material.[2]

The product's trajectory is also a compact record of how Google has handled this kind of tool: an experimental release for a small group of users in one country in 2023, the label dropped in October 2024, a business tier in December 2024 and an individual subscription route in February 2025, and finally a change of name in July 2026 that folded it into the Gemini brand.[1][2]
