Background
Wu Yonghui spent nearly two decades at Google. He worked on Google Brain from 2014 and became a Google Fellow. He later served as a vice president of research at Google DeepMind.[1]
Google Brain was a research group within Google that worked on machine learning and deep learning. The Fellow title is a senior honour inside Google, given to engineers and scientists whose work has had lasting impact.
Large-model teams often separate the people who study the basic methods from the people who apply models to products. Splitting the two lets one group look further ahead while the other focuses on delivering features to users.
Foundational research in AI usually means work on the basic methods behind models, such as new model designs, training techniques and ways of evaluating results, rather than building a single product on top of them. A chief scientist role in a research organisation typically sets the scientific direction for the whole group.
What happened
Wu reportedly joined ByteDance on 17 February 2025.[1] He became head of foundational research for the Seed large-model team, which is ByteDance's team for its large AI models.[2][3] He reports directly to CEO Liang Rubo.[2]
Key details
Several algorithm and technology leaders who had reported to Seed head Zhu Wenjia moved to report to Wu. Zhu continued to lead model applications, so the change separated foundational research from the work of applying the models.[2]
TechNode described the role as similar to a chief scientist.[2]
Impact
A reporting line describes who a team answers to in the organisation. When a research leader reports directly to the chief executive, the research agenda is set at the top of the company rather than inside a product group.
The appointment placed a senior research leader from Google's AI groups at the centre of ByteDance's model work. Its effect is that foundational research now has its own leader, reporting to the CEO, while applications stay under Zhu Wenjia.
