ByteDance releases Doubao-Seed-2.0

Background

A general agent model is designed to carry out multi-step tasks on a user's behalf, such as searching, using tools and completing a sequence of actions, rather than only answering a single question. Doubao is ByteDance's assistant app, and Volcano Engine is its cloud platform, through which businesses can call the same models.

What happened

On 14 February 2026 ByteDance released the Doubao-Seed-2.0 series in the Doubao app and on Volcano Engine.^[1][2] The series has three general agent models, Pro, Lite and Mini.^[3]

Positioning and prices

ByteDance positioned Seed2.0 Pro against GPT-5.2 and Gemini 3 Pro, and claimed that its prices were about an order of magnitude lower.^[1]

Key results

In ByteDance's own tests, Seed2.0 Pro scored 88.9 on GPQA Diamond, 77.3 on BrowseComp and 55.8 on Terminal Bench 2.0. GPQA Diamond is a set of difficult science questions, BrowseComp tests finding hard-to-locate information on the web, and Terminal Bench tests tasks carried out in a command-line environment.^[3]

Users

According to QuestMobile, the Doubao app had 155 million weekly active users in early December 2025.^[2]

The launch came two days after Seedance 2.0 debuted.^[2]

Results from a developer's own tests depend on the setup, such as the prompts and tools used, so they are best read alongside independent comparisons. The price claim is also relative to rival models and depends on which pricing tier is compared.

Model families often come in several tiers so that users can trade capability against speed and cost. In general, a smaller tier gives up some capability for lower cost and faster replies, while a larger tier handles the most demanding requests.
