What it is
TRAE is an AI coding product from ByteDance that launched in January 2025. In its first year the company shipped three main products: the TRAE plugin, the TRAE IDE and TRAE SOLO.[1] An IDE, or integrated development environment, is the software where programmers write, run and debug code, and a plugin adds features to an existing editor.
Origins and first year
By the end of 2025 TRAE reported 6 million registered users across nearly 200 countries. Its active users were concentrated in China, the United States, Brazil, India and Japan.[1]
In 2025 users ran nearly 60 million sessions and close to 500 million queries, and generated close to 100 billion lines of code. Its Cue edit-prediction feature made nearly 1 billion suggestions.[1]
TRAE 2.0, a redesigned interface, was announced on 18 July 2025.[2]
SOLO
SOLO mode was announced on 17 July 2025 as an all-in-one context engineer. It drafts a specification and then plans, builds and ships features. SOLO ran on Claude 4 Sonnet and was included in the Pro plan.[3] Context engineering here refers to giving the model the background, specification and plan it needs before it writes code.
SOLO left beta and became generally available on 4 November 2025. The release added SOLO Coder, which provides plan mode and the orchestration of sub-agents, and SOLO Builder, which takes designs from Figma and produces deployed apps.[4]
Open-source research agent
Trae Agent is an open-source agent for software engineering, released under the MIT license. In a paper posted on 31 July 2025, it reported a 75.20% Pass@1 score on SWE-bench Verified, placing first on the leaderboard.[5][6] Pass@1 measures how often the first attempt at a task succeeds, and SWE-bench Verified is a benchmark built from real software issues.
Pricing
From 24 February 2026 TRAE moved to token-based pricing. Its tiers included Lite at $3, Pro at $10 and Ultra at $100 per month, plus a 14-day free Pro trial for new users.[7]
The new SOLO and TRAE Work
On 31 March 2026 a new standalone SOLO agent launched in beta on desktop and web. It has a Code mode and a More Than Coding mode for documents, data analysis and research.[8]
On 9 June 2026 SOLO was renamed TRAE Work, an AI workspace for non-engineering professionals available on desktop, web and mobile. It sits alongside TRAE IDE, which has IDE and SOLO modes.[9]
Place in the product line
The product's scope has moved from an IDE and plugin to an agent workspace that is also aimed at non-engineering professionals.[9]
