Background
In 2025 TRAE, ByteDance's AI coding product, added a more autonomous way of working called SOLO. On 17 July 2025 TRAE announced it as an “all-in-one context engineer.” The tool drafts a spec, then plans, builds and ships features.[1]
A sub-agent works on one part of a larger job and reports back to the agent that delegated it. This structure lets a system split a refactoring task or a complex feature into smaller pieces that are handled in sequence or in parallel.
Context engineering refers to deciding what information an AI model sees, such as project files, documentation and earlier parts of the conversation. The quality of the output depends heavily on that input, which is why the term describes the task of preparing the model's context rather than only writing prompts.
Spec-driven development means writing a clear description of what the software should do before any code is written. A written spec gives an agent a plan to check its work against.
What happened
SOLO ran on Claude 4 Sonnet and was included in the TRAE Pro plan. Early access was granted by codes.[1] It combined editor, browser, terminal and documentation in one view, and it included a SOLO Builder for building web apps.[1]
Key details
SOLO became generally available on 4 November 2025, together with two products, SOLO Coder and SOLO Builder.[2] SOLO Coder added a plan mode and the orchestration of specialised sub-agents, which handle refactoring and complex features.[2] A sub-agent is a smaller agent that a main agent hands a specific task to. SOLO Builder could turn Figma designs into deployed apps, with Supabase, Stripe and large language model services integrated.[2]
Impact
Between the July announcement and the November release, SOLO moved from early access to two tools for different jobs: one for coding projects and one for building web apps from designs. The direction is for the AI to handle more of the steps from requirements to delivery, rather than only completing code within a single file.
