What it is
Claude Opus 5 is a large language model from Anthropic, released on 24 July 2026 with the API ID claude-opus-5. It is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, the same as Opus 4.8. [1][2]
Background
Anthropic said Opus 5 came close to the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5 at half the price. [1]
Main features
Coding and agentic work. On CursorBench, Opus 5 scored within 0.5% of the peak score of Fable 5, while costing half as much per task. Anthropic reported new state-of-the-art results on Frontier-Bench v0.1 and on GDPval-AA. On ARC-AGI 3 it scored about three times the next-best model's score, and it more than doubled Opus 4.8's performance on Frontier-Bench. [1]
Science. Opus 5 improved on Opus 4.8 on every life-sciences evaluation Anthropic ran. It gained 10.2 points on organic chemistry structure inference and 7.7 points on protein tasks. Anthropic called it its most capable generally available model for scientific research. [1]
Alignment. Anthropic said Opus 5 was its most aligned model to date on its automated behavioural audit, with an overall misaligned-behaviour score of 2.3. It also adhered to Claude's constitution, the set of principles Anthropic uses to guide its models, better than Opus 4.8, Sonnet 5 and Fable 5. [1]
Cyber capabilities. Anthropic said it intentionally avoided training on cyber tasks. Opus 5 nearly matched Mythos 5 at finding vulnerabilities on OSS-Fuzz, but it was far behind at developing exploits. [1]
Its cyber classifiers allow it to find vulnerabilities in source code, but block binary scanning, penetration testing and exploit generation. Requests that are flagged fall back to Opus 4.8 by default. [1]
Speed and betas. Fast mode runs about 2.5 times faster at twice the base price. New betas included mid-conversation tool changes and automatic API fallbacks. [1]
Position in the timeline
Opus 5 became the new default model on Claude Max, and it was made available on all platforms, including Claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Cowork. [1]
In Anthropic's comparison table for Fable 5.1, Opus 5 scored 52.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 and 63.6% on Humanity's Last Exam with tools. [4] Training data ran to May 2026, according to Wikipedia. [5] Opus 5 was succeeded by Claude Opus 5.5 on 22 September 2026, and its retirement is not scheduled before 24 July 2027. [3]
