What it is

Claude Cowork is an agent for knowledge work that is not software development: research, analysis, and the creation of documents. Anthropic says it uses the same agentic approach as Claude Code, the company's coding agent. In practice that means a person describes a goal, and the agent carries out the steps needed to reach it, using files, connectors and specialised instructions along the way.

Origins

According to Wikipedia, Cowork launched as a research preview in January 2026. An enterprise release followed in February 2026, and a feature called Dispatch arrived in March 2026.[2]

In February 2026 Anthropic's Series G funding announcement cited eleven open-source Cowork plugins. The announcement is one of the company's own public statements about the product's early ecosystem.[3]

Claude Sonnet 4.6 became the default model for Free and Pro users in Cowork in February 2026.[4]

Plugins and administration

Cowork is extended through plugins. A plugin bundles skills, connectors and subagents into one package. A skill is a set of instructions for a task, a connector links the agent to an outside service, and a subagent is a smaller agent that handles part of a job.[1]

Administrators could create private plugin marketplaces from 24 February 2026, so that an organisation could offer its own plugins to its staff rather than relying only on public ones. Enterprise deployment controls arrived on 9 April 2026, giving organisations a way to manage how Cowork is rolled out.[1]

Key features

An effort selector came to Cowork with Claude Opus 4.8 in May 2026. Effort controls how much work the model puts into each answer, so the selector lets a user trade speed for thoroughness on a given task.[5]

On 26 August 2026 a built-in browser was added to the Cowork side panel, so the agent could work with web pages inside the same window as the task.[1]

Cowork now runs on desktop, web and mobile. The desktop app adds access to local folders and applications, which the web and mobile versions do not have. It is included in the Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans.[1]

Where it stands

Cowork is the part of the Claude family aimed at people whose work is documents, data and research rather than code. Its design takes the approach Anthropic used for Claude Code and applies it to a wider set of tasks. The plugin and admin features show the product moving toward organisations, while the desktop app's access to local files shows the agent working closer to the user's own machine.[1]

For a reader following the product, the timeline is the simplest guide: a research preview in early 2026, an enterprise release and plugin marketplaces in the spring, and a built-in browser by late summer.[1][2]
