Anthropic launches Claude Cowork

Anthropic released Claude Cowork as a research preview in January 2026, an agentic tool that applies the approach behind Claude Code to non-coding knowledge work such as research, analysis and document creation. An enterprise release followed in February 2026.

Background

Claude Code, Anthropic's tool for software engineering work, is built on what the company calls an agentic approach: instead of answering a single prompt in one pass, the model works through a task over multiple steps, using tools as it goes. That design suits work where the steps are not known in advance and where the model has to look things up, check results and revise.

Claude Cowork takes that same approach and points it at a different kind of task. Anthropic describes Cowork as a way to hand Claude non-coding knowledge work — research, analysis and document creation — rather than code[2]. The company frames it as bringing Claude Code's engineering capabilities to a broader scope of knowledge work tasks[3].

The launch

Anthropic launched Claude Cowork as a research preview in January 2026[1]. A research preview is the label the company uses for an early version of a product released to users while development continues, so the feature set at launch should be read as a starting point rather than a finished product.

The core claim Anthropic makes for Cowork is continuity of method: the product uses the same agentic approach as Claude Code, applied to tasks that do not involve programming[2]. In practice that means the user states a goal — gather material on a topic, work through a set of figures, produce a document — and the model is expected to carry it out across steps rather than return a single reply.

Who can use it

According to Anthropic's Cowork page, the product was rolling out to the Pro, Max and Ultra subscription plans, with more plans to follow[2]. The same page lists Claude Cowork as included in the Enterprise plan[2]. An enterprise release came in February 2026, the month after the research preview[1].

That ordering is worth noting: the preview arrived first for individual subscribers, and the enterprise offering followed separately. For organisations, the relevant point is that Cowork is part of an existing enterprise plan rather than a standalone purchase.

Plugins and shipping pace

Alongside the launch, Anthropic said it had shipped more than 30 products and features in January 2026, and it cited eleven open-source Cowork plugins[3]. Plugins are extensions that package a particular workflow so it can be reused; releasing them as open source means the code behind those extensions is published and can be inspected, adapted or built on by others. For Cowork, the plugins indicate that Anthropic expects the product to be extended task by task rather than used only as a general-purpose assistant.

Where it sits

Cowork marks a deliberate move of Anthropic's agentic tooling out of software engineering and into general knowledge work. The method stays the same; the domain changes. Research, analysis and document creation are tasks performed far more widely than programming, so the same capability reaches a much larger group of users, including those who never write code.

The product also shows how Anthropic is packaging that capability commercially: a tiered set of subscription plans, from individual Pro, Max and Ultra plans to Enterprise, with Cowork as a feature inside them rather than a separate product line[2]. And the open-source plugins suggest a model in which outside developers add task-specific extensions on top of the core tool[3].

What Cowork does not change is the underlying dependency: the quality of the output still rests on the model's ability to plan a multi-step task and to use the tools it is given. Cowork is the packaging of that ability for a wider set of jobs, released first as a preview and then, a month later, for enterprise customers[1][2].
