What it is
Claude Opus 4.6 is a large language model developed by Anthropic and released on 5 February 2026 under the API identifier claude-opus-4-6. It was presented as an upgrade to Anthropic's smartest model at the time.[1] A context window is the amount of text a model can take into account at once. Opus 4.6 was the first Opus-class model with a 1M-token context window, which was in beta at launch on the Claude Developer Platform. It supported up to 128K output tokens.[1]
Origins
Anthropic's pricing documentation now states that Claude 4.6 and later models include the full 1M-token window at standard pricing.[2] The 1M-token window was first offered on this model in beta.[1]
Main features
The model introduced adaptive thinking, in which the model decides when to think more deeply. It also offered effort levels from low to max, and context compaction in beta, which summarises older context so a long session can continue.[1]
Launch pricing was $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. For prompts over 200K tokens the price was $10 for input and $37.50 for output.[1][2]
Anthropic reported several results. On SWE-bench Verified the model scored 81.42% with a prompt modification. On the 8-needle 1M variant of MRCR v2, a long-context retrieval test, it scored 76%, against 18.5% for Sonnet 4.5. It scored 53.0% on Humanity's Last Exam with tools, and about 144 Elo points ahead of GPT-5.2 on GDPval-AA, an evaluation of economically useful work.[1]
On BrowseComp, a benchmark of web research, it scored 86.8% with a multi-agent harness, a setup in which several model instances work together. On Harvey's BigLaw Bench, which tests legal work, it scored 90.2%.[1]
The launch shipped with agent teams in Claude Code, in research preview. Upgraded versions of Claude in Excel and Claude in PowerPoint, the latter also in research preview, arrived at the same time.[1][5]
Anthropic said the model was as well aligned as Opus 4.5 and had the lowest over-refusal rate of recent Claude models, meaning it refused harmless requests least often. It also added six new cybersecurity probes to detect misuse.[1]
Its place in development
On 10 February 2026 Anthropic said that Claude Opus 4.6 did not cross its AI R&D-4 capability threshold, a level in its Responsible Scaling Policy.[6]
Project Glasswing later used the model as the comparison point for Claude Mythos Preview. Anthropic reported 80.8% for Opus 4.6 against 93.9% for Mythos Preview on SWE-bench Verified, and 65.4% against 82.0% on Terminal-Bench 2.0.[4]
The model is available on Claude.ai, the Claude API and all major cloud platforms. Its retirement is not sooner than 5 February 2027.[1][3]
