What it is

The upgraded Claude 3.5 Sonnet was announced on 22 October 2024. Its API ID was claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022. It kept the same price and speed as the version it replaced.[1][2]

Coding and agentic gains

On SWE-bench Verified, a benchmark built from real software problems, the score rose from 33.4% to 49.0%. Anthropic said this was higher than all publicly available models at the time.[1] Each problem asks a model to fix a real issue in a code repository. A higher score means more of those fixes succeeded.

On TAU-bench, which tests agentic tool use, the retail score improved from 62.6% to 69.2%, and the airline score from 36.0% to 46.0%.[1]

Computer use

The headline addition was computer use. Anthropic said the upgraded Sonnet was the first frontier AI model to offer computer use in public beta. Through the API, a developer can have the model look at a screen, move a cursor, click buttons and type text, much as a person would.[1]

On OSWorld, a benchmark of computer tasks, the model scored 14.9% in the screenshot-only category, where the next best system scored 7.8%. When allowed more steps, it scored 22.0%.[1]

Anthropic called computer use experimental, and said it was “at times cumbersome and error-prone”. Early adopters included Asana, Canva, Cognition, DoorDash, Replit and The Browser Company.[1]

Testing and access

The US AI Safety Institute and the UK AI Safety Institute jointly tested the model before deployment. Anthropic judged the ASL-2 Standard still appropriate for it.[1] ASL-2 is a safety level under Anthropic's Responsible Scaling Policy.

Computer use was offered through the Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI. The upgraded model was available to all Claude users.[1]

Place in the story

Wikipedia gives the training data as running to April 2024.[3]

Claude 3.7 Sonnet succeeded this version in February 2025. Anthropic announced the deprecation of claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022 on 13 August 2025, and it was retired on 28 October 2025.[2]
