What it is

Claude Opus 4.1 is a large language model developed by Anthropic and released on 5 August 2025 under the API identifier claude-opus-4-1-20250805. It was an upgrade to Claude Opus 4 for agentic tasks, real-world coding and reasoning. Agentic tasks are jobs in which the model carries out a sequence of actions, such as running tools or editing files, rather than answering a single question.[1]

Origins

Anthropic said it planned to release substantially larger model improvements in the following weeks.[1] The model was released under AI Safety Level 3 (ASL-3) protections, according to Anthropic's announcement of Claude Haiku 4.5.[4]

Main features

Without extended thinking, the model scored 74.5% on SWE-bench Verified, a coding benchmark. Anthropic described this as state-of-the-art coding performance.[1] It also reported better detail tracking and agentic search for research and data analysis.[1]

The price was the same as for Opus 4: $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens.[1][2]

The model was available to paid Claude users, in Claude Code, on the Claude API, on Amazon Bedrock and on Google Cloud Vertex AI.[1]

Customers reported gains over Opus 4. GitHub reported improvements in multi-file code refactoring, which means changing code that spans several files without changing its behaviour. Windsurf reported a one-standard-deviation improvement on its junior developer benchmark, about the same size of leap as from Sonnet 3.7 to Sonnet 4.[1]

Wikipedia notes that Opus 4 and Opus 4.1 were given the ability to end persistently abusive conversations.[5]

Its place in development

Claude Opus 4.5 succeeded the model on 24 November 2025, at a third of its price.[5]

Anthropic announced the deprecation of Claude Opus 4.1 on 5 June 2026. The model was retired from the Claude API on 5 August 2026, and Anthropic recommended Claude Opus 4.8 as the replacement.[3]
