What it is
Claude 3.5 Sonnet was released on 20 June 2024. Its API ID was claude-3-5-sonnet-20240620. It was the first model of the Claude 3.5 family.[1][2]
Speed, price and context
Claude 3.5 Sonnet was priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, the same as Claude 3 Sonnet. It had a 200K-token context window.[1] A token is a small piece of text, roughly a word or part of a word.
It ran at twice the speed of Claude 3 Opus while costing what the mid-tier model cost. Wikipedia notes that it outperformed Claude 3 Opus on Anthropic's own benchmarks.[1][3]
Capabilities
Anthropic reported that in an internal agentic coding evaluation, the model solved 64% of problems, against 38% for Claude 3 Opus. An agentic evaluation tests whether a model can carry out multi-step tasks on its own, not just answer one question.[1]
Anthropic called it its strongest vision model yet, surpassing Claude 3 Opus on standard vision benchmarks.[1]
Artifacts and Projects
The model launched together with Artifacts, a claude.ai feature that shows generated code, documents or website designs in a window beside the chat.[1]
Five days later, the model powered the new Projects feature for Pro and Team users.[4]
Access and safety
The model was free on claude.ai and the Claude iOS app, with higher limits for Pro and Team subscribers. It was available through the Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI.[1]
Anthropic rated it AI Safety Level 2 (ASL-2). The UK AI Safety Institute ran pre-deployment testing and shared results with the US AI Safety Institute.[1]
Later versions
An upgraded version, claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022, followed on 22 October 2024. Anthropic announced the deprecation of both versions on 13 August 2025, and both were retired on 28 October 2025.[2]
