What it is

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot released by OpenAI on 30 November 2022 as a low-key research preview. The first model behind it was GPT-3.5.[1] It later became one of the most widely used AI products, and the name now covers a family of apps, plans and features rather than a single model.

Origins

ChatGPT reached 1 million users within five days of release and about 100 million users two months later.[1] ChatGPT Plus launched on 1 February 2023 at $20 a month, and a ChatGPT API followed on 1 March 2023.[1][3]

GPT-4 came to Plus subscribers on 14 March 2023. Plugins arrived on 23 March 2023, and an official iOS app on 18 May 2023.[1][2] ChatGPT Enterprise launched on 28 August 2023. Voice and image input arrived on 25 September 2023, and DALL·E 3 image generation in October 2023.[1][2]

At OpenAI's first DevDay, on 6 November 2023, the company introduced custom GPTs and reported 100 million weekly active users. The GPT Store opened on 10 January 2024 with more than 3 million GPTs created.[1][2]

GPT-4o, released in May 2024, was made available free. Web search launched in October 2024. On 5 December 2024 OpenAI launched ChatGPT Pro, a $200-a-month plan with o1 pro mode.[1][5]

Main features

The product gained new capabilities steadily. A custom GPT is a version of ChatGPT configured with its own instructions and tools. The GPT Store is the catalogue where such versions are shared.[1]

In 2025 OpenAI added Operator and deep research in early 2025, and native GPT-4o image generation in March 2025. It launched the Codex coding agent in May 2025, ChatGPT agent on 17 July 2025, and GPT-5 on 7 August 2025.[1]

The ChatGPT Atlas browser launched on 21 October 2025. In September 2025 OpenAI added MCP support for apps and an instant-checkout shopping feature. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard that lets an AI system connect to outside tools and data sources.[1]

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health in January 2026.[1]

Its place in the field

Weekly users grew to about 500 million by the end of March 2025, to more than 800 million by 6 October 2025, and to 900 million by February 2026.[1][4]

In January 2026 OpenAI also announced ad testing for free users in the United States. Ads began appearing in March 2026.[1]

On 9 July 2026 ChatGPT Work, a workplace companion for enterprise teams, launched alongside GPT-5.6. GPT-Live voice replaced Advanced Voice Mode on the same occasion.[6]

GPT-6 Instant, with an “Intelligent UI” of interactive widgets, rolled out to paid users on 7 October 2026 and to free users the next day.[7]

OpenAI has faced lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT contributed to suicides, mental-health crises and violence. The company disputes these claims. Italy briefly banned the service in 2023 over data protection concerns.[1]
