What it is

GPT-5.4 is a model from OpenAI, released on 5 March 2026 as GPT-5.4 Thinking and GPT-5.4 Pro. Neither version was available to free users.[1][2]

Origins

GPT-5.4 succeeded GPT-5.2, and it was in turn succeeded by GPT-5.5 in April 2026.[1] In the same period OpenAI released GPT-5.3 Instant, which became a new default chat model in ChatGPT.[5][7]

Main features

The model added built-in computer use, and OpenAI described it with an improved deep research feature and a focus on professional workflows.[1]

OpenAI reported 33% fewer factual errors than GPT-5.2.[1]

On OSWorld-Verified, a test of operating a desktop computer, GPT-5.4 scored 75%. GPT-5.2 scored 47.3% on the same test, and an average person scored 72.4%.[1]

The API documentation gives GPT-5.4 a context window of 1,050,000 tokens and a limit of up to 128,000 output tokens. Its knowledge cutoff is 31 August 2025. Prompts longer than 272,000 tokens are billed at higher rates.[3]

The API price was $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. GPT-5.4 Pro cost $30 and $180 on the same basis.[3][5]

Computer use means the model can look at a screen and carry out actions such as clicking and typing to complete a task on a computer. OSWorld-Verified is a test that asks a model to operate a desktop environment, so a score on it indicates how well the model completes such tasks. The 72.4% figure for an average person is given as a comparison point.[1]

Deep research is a feature in which the model searches for information across many sources and assembles a longer written report. OpenAI presented GPT-5.4 as an improvement to that feature.[1]

Smaller models

GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5.4 nano followed on 17 March 2026. Mini was available to free ChatGPT users, while nano was available only through the API.[1] The Decoder reported that mini and nano cost up to about four times as much as their GPT-5 equivalents.[4]

Codex and lifecycle

GPT-5.4 also came to Codex, together with a Windows version of the Codex app.[7] OpenAI deprecated gpt-5.4-nano on 1 October 2026, with shutdown set for 1 April 2027.[6]

Place in the series

GPT-5.4 sits between GPT-5.2, which it replaced, and GPT-5.5, its successor from April 2026. The series is covered in the entries for those models.
