Anthropic launches the Claude Pro subscription

On 7 September 2023 Anthropic introduced Claude Pro, its first paid consumer plan: $20 a month in the US or GBP 18 in the UK, with five times the free tier's usage of Claude 2, priority access at busy times and early access to new features.

Background

Before it offered any paid plan, Anthropic gave consumers access to Claude through a free tier, and that free tier ran on Claude 2.[1] Anthropic said early users cited longer context windows, faster outputs and complex reasoning among the reasons they chose Claude.ai.[1] Those preferences describe a particular style of use — long documents, repeated questions, multi-step problems — that uses up a conversation allowance quickly, and an allowance is exactly what a paid plan organises.

What happened

On 7 September 2023 Anthropic introduced Claude Pro, its first paid consumer plan.[1] It cost $20 a month in the United States or GBP 18 a month in the United Kingdom.[1] At launch it was available in those two markets only; Anthropic described the plan as "currently available in the US and UK".[1]

The narrow start meant that most people who already used Claude could not subscribe, whatever they were willing to pay. It also meant the plan could be tried out on two English-speaking markets before being offered more widely.

What subscribers got

The central difference was volume. Subscribers received five times the free tier's usage of Claude 2.[1] Anthropic added two further benefits: priority access to Claude during busy periods, and early access to new features as they appeared.[1] The model itself was the same one free users had; what changed was how much of it a subscriber could use, how quickly they got in when demand was high, and how soon they saw additions to the product.

Anthropic illustrated the plan with three examples of Pro work: summarising research papers, querying contracts, and iterating on coding projects.[1] Each involves either a long document to read or a series of exchanges in which the user keeps refining an answer, which fits a plan whose promise is more usage rather than a different capability.

Why it mattered

Claude Pro was the first time Anthropic asked consumers to pay for Claude directly, and it set the shape of that offer: a flat monthly fee, a multiple of the free allowance, and queue priority at peak times.[1] A monthly price tied to a multiple of free usage links what a heavy user pays to what that user costs to serve, which is the usual reason AI providers put a subscription in front of a free tier.

For users, the plan turned an open question — how much can I use this before I run out? — into a purchasable quantity, and it gave the heaviest users a reason to stay on Claude.ai rather than move to another tool when limits bit. For Anthropic, it created a consumer revenue line separate from whatever else the company sold.

The launch also fixed the vocabulary the product would be discussed in afterwards: a free tier and a paid tier of the same model, differentiated mainly by usage, speed of access and early features.[1] That pattern became familiar across AI assistants, and Claude Pro was where Anthropic first put it into practice.
