What it is

Amazon is an American technology company, headquartered in Seattle and Arlington County, Virginia. In the AI field, its most important units are Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud arm, and the Amazon AGI team that works on foundation models.[1]

Origins

Jeff Bezos founded the company on 5 July 1994 in Bellevue, Washington. It was first named "Cadabra" and was renamed Amazon in November 1994.[1] Andy Jassy succeeded Bezos as chief executive on 5 July 2021, and Bezos became executive chair.[1]

Its cloud arm, AWS, began offering web APIs in 2002. It launched the S3 storage service in 2006 and the EC2 computing service in 2008.[1] Amazon's consumer side also has an AI history. It announced the Alexa voice assistant with the Echo speaker on 6 November 2014.[2] The current generation of Alexa is described below.

Main features

For AI, the most visible part of Amazon is AWS. In April 2023 AWS announced Amazon Bedrock, a managed service for foundation models from Amazon and other providers, along with its own Titan models. Bedrock became generally available on 28 September 2023.[3][4] Its details are covered in the entries on the Bedrock service and the Titan and Nova models.

Amazon introduced the Amazon Nova family of foundation models on 3 December 2024. On 2 December 2025 it followed with Nova 2 and the Nova Forge service, which is for building custom models from Nova checkpoints.[5][6] Nova models are available exclusively in Amazon Bedrock.

Amazon also builds its own AI chips, Trainium and Inferentia. At re:Invent 2025 it introduced Trainium3, which it described as its first 3-nanometre AI chip, in UltraServers of up to 144 chips.[11]

On the consumer side, Alexa+ was announced on 26 February 2025 as a generative-AI rebuild of Alexa. It costs $19.99 per month, or is free with Amazon Prime.[10]

Other generative AI products include the Amazon Q work assistant, which entered preview on 28 November 2023. At re:Invent 2025 Amazon also introduced the Kiro autonomous coding agent and other "frontier agents".[12][11]

Place in the development

Amazon's position in AI is shaped by its investment in Anthropic. It invested $4 billion in Anthropic from September 2023 and a further $4 billion in November 2024. Through these investments AWS became Anthropic's primary cloud and training partner.[7][8][1] Wikipedia also reports a further $5 billion investment in April 2026.[1]

Amazon was also a major investor in OpenAI's funding in 2026. According to Wikipedia, in February 2026 Amazon led OpenAI's $110 billion funding round with $50 billion, at a valuation of $730 billion.[9]

The company's workforce changes are part of the same period. Amazon announced about 14,000 corporate job cuts on 28 October 2025, and about 16,000 more in January 2026. It cited adaptation to AI as one reason, in part.[1]

Impact

Amazon's AI effort spans cloud infrastructure, its own foundation models, custom chips, a managed platform for other companies' models, and consumer and work assistants. Its influence on the field comes less from a single model than from the infrastructure it provides and the partnerships it has made.[1][7][8]
