What it is

Amazon Nova is a family of foundation models from Amazon, available exclusively in Amazon Bedrock, the AWS service for accessing AI models. Amazon announced the family on 3 December 2024 at AWS re:Invent. Rohit Prasad, senior vice president of Amazon Artificial General Intelligence, introduced the models.[1][2]

The family has two groups. The understanding models read and reason about text, images and video. The creative models generate images and video.[1]

Origins

Nova is the successor to the Titan family. Amazon's Titan models were its first generation of models in Bedrock, and Nova took over as the main family after them.[1] Nova was itself succeeded by Nova 2 in December 2025.[1]

Amazon credits its technical report, "The Amazon Nova Family of Models: Technical Report and Model Card", to Amazon AGI. The report benchmarks the models on core capabilities, agentic tasks, long context and runtime performance.[3]

Main features

The understanding models are Nova Micro, Nova Lite and Nova Pro. Micro handles text only, with a 128K-token context and the lowest latency and cost in the family.[1] Lite is a low-cost multimodal model with a 300K-token context, and Pro is a multimodal model with the same 300K context.[1]

Lite and Pro accept text, images and video. Lite can analyse up to 30 minutes of video in one request. Pro can process codebases of over 15,000 lines.[1]

The creative models are Nova Canvas, which generates and edits images, and Nova Reel, which generates video from text and images. In AWS's example Reel makes 6-second clips at 1280x720 resolution and 24 frames per second. Both add watermarks to their output.[1]

Amazon said Micro, Lite and Pro were at least 75% cheaper than the best-performing models in their intelligence classes on Bedrock, and that they were the fastest in those classes.[2] It also said the models support 200 languages and can be fine-tuned and distilled on customer data.[2] Distillation means training a smaller model to copy a larger one.

Nova Pro serves as a teacher model for distilling Micro and Lite.[1] The most capable member, Nova Premier, followed on 30 April 2025 with a 1-million-token context.[4]

Place in the development

Nova replaced the Titan family as Amazon's main line of its own models. Its launch brought Amazon's models into a more complete range, covering text, images and video, and tied them to the Bedrock service.[1][2] The line later moved on to Nova 2, which AWS introduced in December 2025.[1]
