Background
Frontier AI models are expensive to build and to run: training and serving them takes very large amounts of computing, most of it rented from cloud providers. That has made cloud companies steady investors in AI labs, and AI labs steady anchor customers for cloud businesses. Such arrangements are usually multi-year commitments, and an equity stake and a compute contract are often negotiated alongside each other. Amazon had already placed a large bet of this kind on Anthropic, a rival of OpenAI[2].
Amazon and OpenAI were not strangers. In November 2025 the two companies announced a multi-year strategic partnership under which OpenAI began using Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud computing[1].
The talks and the round
In January 2026 Amazon entered talks to invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI[2]. The following month the money took shape as part of a much larger round: in February 2026 OpenAI raised $110 billion at a $730 billion valuation, with Amazon leading at $50 billion, alongside SoftBank with $30 billion and Nvidia with $30 billion[1][4]. Wikipedia describes the round as the largest private technology fundraise in history at the time[1].
Key details
Amazon's $50 billion was not to be handed over at once. It was split into two parts: $15 billion initially, and $35 billion in the following months under preset conditions[4].
The investment also came with a commercial agreement attached. OpenAI and AWS expanded an existing $38 billion multiyear agreement by $100 billion over eight years[4]. Reporting on the proposed deal described integrating OpenAI's models into Alexa and other Amazon projects[1][3].
OpenAI was careful to say that the money did not "in any way change the terms" of its relationship with Microsoft[4], a partnership separate from the cloud arrangement with Amazon.
The round grows
The round did not stop at $110 billion. It was extended to $120 billion in March 2026, and in April 2026 OpenAI said it had closed $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation[1][5]. Built In reported on 1 April 2026 that the round had reached $122 billion, bringing OpenAI's valuation to $852 billion[5]. Committed capital here means money investors have formally pledged; a post-money valuation is the company's value calculated after the new money is counted in.
Why it matters
Three things stand out. The first is sheer size: a single private financing round of more than $100 billion, with the largest single check coming from a company that had, until recently, been closer to OpenAI's competitors[1][2]. The second is that the equity investment and the cloud contract moved together — the $50 billion stake sat next to an AWS agreement enlarged by $100 billion over eight years[4]. The third is Amazon's position across the field: it is a major investor in Anthropic as well as the lead investor in this OpenAI round[2].
For OpenAI, the money arrived alongside a distribution question. Putting its models into Alexa and other Amazon products would place them in front of a consumer audience far outside its own applications[1][3]. For the investors, the transaction tied capital to computing supply at a moment when access to large amounts of it is a constraint on what models can be trained and served. The round's final size, $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation, was settled only after the initial February announcement[1][5].
