What Langboat is

Langboat Technology is a Chinese artificial-intelligence company that develops its own family of large language models, the Mengzi models, and packages that model capability into software for companies rather than selling a model on its own.^[1] Its business is organised around one platform plus a set of applications and industry solutions built on top of it.

Origins

The company was founded in June 2021 and was incubated at Sinovation Ventures.^[1] Langboat describes itself as one of the earliest Chinese companies founded with large models as the goal — that is, set up to build foundation models rather than to apply models built elsewhere.^[1] The public record of its model work begins early: its GitHub organisation created the Mengzi repository on 28 September 2021.^[2]

The Mengzi model family

Mengzi is developed in-house rather than licensed from another lab.^[1] The company publishes models publicly through its Hugging Face organisation, which hosts the Mengzi-BERT, Mengzi-T5, Mengzi-OSCAR, Chinese BLOOM and Mengzi3 model families.^[3] The earliest models uploaded there were Mengzi-BERT-base and Mengzi-T5-base, posted in March 2022.^[3]

Mengzi3, the newer generation, also has its own repository on GitHub, created on 29 March 2024.^[2] Taken together, the published record runs from the base models posted in March 2022 to Mengzi3 in 2024, so the family spans more than one generation of work.^[2][3] Publishing models on a public model hub and keeping code repositories under a company organisation makes the timeline checkable from outside: a repository's creation date and a model's upload date are visible to anyone.

Products

The product line centres on an enterprise trusted-agent platform built on a component called LangClaw, which the company describes as the runtime base for enterprise agents.^[1] In this setting an agent means a model-driven program that can call tools and carry out a multi-step task on a user's behalf, and a runtime is the layer that executes those steps, manages what the agent is allowed to reach, and keeps the run recordable. Putting that layer at the centre means the agent platform, rather than a single chat interface, is the product.

Three named applications sit on the platform. Langboat Zhida is a builder for enterprise agent applications; Langboat Zhiku is an enterprise knowledge-base platform; and Langboat Zhihui is a meeting assistant.^[1]

Alongside the platform, Langboat sells industry solutions for finance and marketing, including research assistants, compliance assistants and private-domain marketing assistants.^[1] These are narrower tools aimed at particular jobs inside a company, rather than general-purpose chat.

Where it sits

China's large-model field contains many companies of very different sizes and strategies. Langboat's path is distinguished by two choices visible in its public material: it builds its own models rather than relying only on others', and it puts its commercial weight on enterprise agent software and services.^[1] The dates attached to its repositories and model uploads — a repository in September 2021, first model uploads in March 2022, Mengzi3 in March 2024 — give an outside reader a way to trace how the work developed.^[2][3] For enterprise customers, the combination of a platform, applications and industry-specific assistants means the company sells a deliverable system, not just a model.^[1]
