What Sierra is
Sierra is a company that says it helps businesses build customer experiences with AI agents [1]. An AI agent, in the general sense, is software that carries out a task on someone's behalf — here, holding a conversation with a customer and handling the request — instead of waiting for a person to work through a menu or an inbox. Sierra sells that capability to other businesses, which then present it to their own customers.
Origins
Sierra was co-founded by Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor, who first met while working together at Google [1]. The two came to the problem from different directions, and their records explain much of how the company presents itself.
Taylor was most recently co-CEO of Salesforce [1]. He founded Quip, was chief technology officer of Facebook, and co-created Google Maps; he also serves on the board of OpenAI [1]. That is a career spread across large enterprise software companies, consumer products with very wide audiences, and — through the OpenAI board seat — the frontier labs where the underlying models are built.
Bavor spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs and earlier started Google's AR/VR effort, Project Starline and Google Lens [1]. Google Labs is where the company houses experimental products, Google Lens is a camera-based search product, and Project Starline was a research effort in video communication. His background is in taking early, interface-heavy ideas and turning them into things people actually use.
Augmentation, not replacement
Sierra states that a customer who wants to speak to a human can always do so, and it frames the product as augmentation rather than replacement [1]. In design terms, that makes the handoff between software and person part of the product: a conversation can begin with the agent and finish with a human.
Customers quoted on the page include Clear, Casper and Minted, who describe 24/7 availability and multilingual service [1]. Those are the two properties automation is generally best at — a support desk that does not sleep, answering in the customer's own language — and they are what the quoted customers single out.
Footprint
Sierra says it began in San Francisco and now has offices in Atlanta, London, Madrid, Munich, New York, Paris, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo and Toronto [1]. Read together with the multilingual service its customers mention, the spread suggests a customer base that is not confined to one market.
Where it sits
Customer service and customer experience are among the largest categories of enterprise software spending, and among the first places companies try conversational AI. Sierra's answer to that market is a division of labour: the agent takes the conversation, the human stays reachable. Presenting the product as augmentation is also a response to the obvious worry about such systems — whether a customer can still reach a person. The company's own description leans on availability, language coverage and round-the-clock service rather than on cutting staff.
