What it is
Stanford University is a private research university in Stanford, California. It was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their son, and it opened in 1891 on the Stanfords' former Palo Alto farm.[1]
Its AI history involves several linked units: the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), and the Stanford Research Park.
Origins
Two threads from the university's early and middle history matter for AI. The first is John McCarthy, who coined the term “artificial intelligence”. He became a professor at Stanford in 1962, after leaving MIT, and he retired in 2000.[2][11]
The second thread is the university's links to research and industry. Stanford's trustees established the Stanford Research Institute in 1946, and it separated from the university in 1970.[8] Stanford Research Park, set up in Palo Alto in 1951, is described as the world's first university research park. The university is closely linked with the growth of Silicon Valley.[1]
Known for
McCarthy started the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1963.[3] The Stanley self-driving car, associated with SAIL, won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge.[3]
Fei-Fei Li joined Stanford in 2009. She is the inaugural Sequoia Professor in Computer Science, directed SAIL from 2013 to 2018, and is a founding co-director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI.[4]
David Rumelhart earned his PhD in mathematical psychology at Stanford in 1967. He returned to its faculty in 1987, after 20 years at UC San Diego. Ill health ended his teaching in 1998.[5]
Ilya Sutskever did a brief postdoc with Andrew Ng at Stanford in 2012, before joining Hinton's company DNNresearch.[6]
Google Brain began in 2011 as a collaboration involving Jeff Dean, Greg Corrado and Stanford professor Andrew Ng.[7]
Dario Amodei, later co-founder of Anthropic, earned his bachelor's degree in physics at Stanford and was a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford University School of Medicine.[9]
Place in AI history
Stanford's place in AI history rests on its laboratories, its people and its research institutes. SAIL is the older of the two AI bodies named above, and Stanford HAI works on the broader social and policy questions that AI raises.
Stanford HAI publishes the annual AI Index report, whose archive begins with the 2017 edition. The 2026 edition is the latest.[10]
For readers, Stanford shows how a university can host a laboratory, an institute and a research park in the same region, and how the people who move between them carry ideas from one setting to the next.
