What it is

xAI is an AI company founded by Elon Musk. It was incorporated in Nevada on 9 March 2023 as a public-benefit corporation, a legal status that it had dropped by May 2024, and it was publicly announced on 12 July 2023.[1] Its headquarters are in Palo Alto, California, and from October 2025 the company was located at 1450 Page Mill Road. The company also lists operations in Bastrop, Texas.[1] Its main products are the Grok chatbot and the Grok family of language models.[1][2]

Origins

The founding team had eleven members, led by chief engineer Igor Babuschkin, who had previously worked at Google DeepMind. The other members were Jimmy Ba, Zihang Dai, Kyle Kosic, Manuel Kroiss, Ross Nordeen, Toby Pohlen, Christian Szegedy, Yuhuai Wu, Greg Yang and Guodong Zhang.[1] The company raised money in several rounds. It raised $135 million in equity in November 2023 at a post-money valuation of $673 million. In May 2024 it raised $6 billion, at a post-money valuation of $24 billion. In December 2024 it raised a further $6 billion, at a post-money valuation of $50 billion. In mid-2025 it raised about $5 billion in equity plus $5 billion in debt.[1]

The first model announcement came on 3 November 2023, when xAI introduced Grok-1. It was built on a custom training and inference stack using Kubernetes, Rust and JAX.[2]

Main features

xAI's work covers several areas. It develops large language models, and it released a developer API on 21 October 2024.[1] The company also builds computing infrastructure. It built the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, using about 100,000 NVIDIA Hopper GPUs, which NVIDIA helped install in 122 days. The cluster was used to train the Grok model family.[3]

On 14 July 2025 the US Department of Defense announced a $200 million contract with xAI.[1]

The model lineup in 2026 included Grok 4.20, a multi-agent model, along with Grok 4.3, Grok 4.5, Grok 4.6 and Grok 4.7. The company also released the Grok Build agentic coding model, Grok Voice, and the Grok Imagine video and image models.[8]

Ownership changes

On 28 March 2025 Musk announced that xAI had acquired X Corp. in an all-stock deal. The deal valued xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion, and the two were combined as X.AI Holdings Corp.[1]

On 2 February 2026 SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal. The deal valued SpaceX at about $1 trillion and xAI at about $250 billion, which made xAI a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary.[4][1]

Several co-founders left in early 2026. Jimmy Ba was reported to have left on 10 February, Guodong Zhang and Zihang Dai in early March, and Ross Nordeen in late March. That left Musk as the only remaining co-founder.[1] On 10 April 2026 Michael Nicolls, a Starlink vice president at SpaceX, became president of the company.[1]

On 16 June 2026 SpaceX agreed to buy Anysphere, the maker of the Cursor coding editor, in a $60 billion all-stock deal. Grok 4.5 and later models were co-trained with Cursor.[1]

Name changes

The company rebranded as SpaceXAI in July 2026.[5][1] On 4 October 2026 Musk said it would be renamed SpaceXSI, with “Super Intelligence” as the meaning of the new name. Its X account became @SpaceXSI on 10 October 2026, while the legal name remained SpaceXAI LLC.[6][7][1]

Where it stands

xAI is now part of SpaceX. It was founded as an independent startup in 2023 and became a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary in February 2026.[1][4]
